Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Bennett Trust

"Michael! Where are you?" Daniel shouted into the phone, leaning over the counter. "Are you out of surgery?!"
"Daniel...?" Michael gasped for air, a ragged breath rattling in his chest. "Thank God... listen to me. Vanessa... she wasn't working alone. She has... people inside the company. Inside the security detail."
"Who, Michael?!" Daniel demanded. "Tell me!"
"The safe... she didn't get the primary ledger," Michael wheezed out. "I... I hid the key. Noah knows... Noah knows where the key is. She knows he saw her... she can't let him talk to the police..."
A sudden, sharp commotion echoed through the phone line—the sound of heavy footsteps, shouting nurses, and a mechanical alarm beep-beeping frantically.
"Sir! You cannot be in here!" a nurse’s voice screamed over the receiver, followed by a heavy metallic thud and the sudden line dead-tone.
"Michael! Michael!" Daniel yelled, but the call was disconnected.
Daniel slammed his phone onto the island counter. "I’m going to St. Jude right now."
"I'm coming with you," Claire said, already grabbing her coat from the entryway rack.
"No, Claire!" Daniel said, grabbing her shoulders firmly. "Noah is upstairs! If Vanessa or her people know where we are, Noah cannot be left alone in this house! You have to stay here and guard him!"
Claire looked up into Daniel’s frantic eyes. He was right. Noah was the primary witness—and the key to proving everything.
"Take my gun," Daniel said, opening a hidden biometric safe beneath the kitchen counter and pulling out a sleek, dark 9mm pistol. He slid a loaded magazine into the handle with a sharp click and handed it to her. "You know how to use this?"
"My father was a state trooper, Daniel," Claire said, taking the weapon, checking the safety chamber, and racking the slide with practiced efficiency. "I know how to fire it."
"Keep the security system on full lockdown," Daniel ordered, kissing her forehead deeply. "I’ll call Detective Miller and have two police units posted outside this gate within twenty minutes."
Daniel pulled his coat on, rushed out into the garage, and sped off into the heavy night rain.
Claire locked the garage door behind him, activated the home’s commercial-grade infrared alarm system, and walked quietly upstairs to the guest room.
Noah was awake, sitting up in bed, his small knees pulled tight against his chest under the thick blanket.
Claire slid the pistol into the waistband of her jeans behind her sweater, walked into the room, and sat on the edge of the mattress.
"Hey," she said softly, offering a warm smile. "Your dad is awake, Noah. He spoke to us on the phone."
Noah’s dark eyes widened slightly. "Is he okay?"
"He's fighting," Claire said. "He’s strong. But he said something strange, Noah. He said you know where a special key is hidden."
Noah went completely still. He looked down at his small hands, his fingers twisting the edge of the blanket.
"Dad told me it was our secret game," Noah whispered. "He gave me a little metal box last week when Mom was at her spa appointment. He told me to hide it where no grown-up ever looks."
Claire leaned closer, keeping her tone gentle, unhurried, and calm. "Where did you hide it, sweetheart?"
Noah reached into the pocket of his gray hoodie—the hoodie provided by the police station—and pulled out a small, heavy silver object tied to a blue woven string.
It was a antique brass key with intricate, old-fashioned teeth.
"I didn't hide it in the house," Noah murmured, looking up at Claire. "I kept it on me. Inside my sock."
Claire stared at the key in his tiny hand. The boy had carried the sole piece of evidence that could expose a multi-million-dollar criminal conspiracy straight through his father’s stabbing, straight through the wedding ballroom, and straight through a police station interrogation, without a single adult ever noticing.
"Noah," Claire said softly, touching his cheek. "You are the bravest boy I have ever met."
Before Noah could reply, the house’s central security system panel on the hallway wall let out a sudden, high-pitched, warning tone.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A cool, automated female voice resonated from the ceiling speakers: WARNING: EXTERIOR PERIMETER FENCE BREACHED. ZONE THREE: REAR GARDEN.

Claire’s heart dropped into her stomach.
She pulled the 9mm pistol from her waistband, disengaged the safety with a sharp click, and pulled Noah behind her into the dark walk-in closet.
