Chapter 9 - The Recovery

Three months later.
The autumn leaves painted the Mercer Island estate in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and deep red.
On the sunlit back patio overlooking the quiet lake, Michael Bennett sat in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a warm blanket, a cup of tea resting on the side table. He was still pale, his left arm supported by a medical sling, but his cheeks had regained their natural color, and his eyes were bright and clear.
Standing beside him, tossing a football across the manicured lawn with six-year-old enthusiasm, was Noah.
"Go long, Uncle Daniel!" Noah laughed, throwing a spiral pass toward Daniel, who caught it with a dramatic dive into the grass, making the boy burst into bright, musical laughter.
Claire stepped out onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and warm cinnamon pastries.
"How are you feeling today, Michael?" Claire asked, placing the tray on the table beside him.
Michael looked at her, his eyes shining with deep, unpayable gratitude.
"Better than I deserve, Claire," Michael said softly, looking out at his son playing on the lawn. "The doctors said I’ll have full mobility in my shoulder by spring."
"And the company?"
"Daniel and the new board finalized the restructuring yesterday," Michael explained, taking a sip of tea. "Every dollar stolen from the charitable foundation has been fully restored from Vanessa’s seized personal accounts. We’ve established a new oversight committee led by independent auditors."
Michael paused, turning his head to look directly at Claire.
"I never got to properly thank you, Claire," Michael said, his voice trembling slightly. "For what you did that night. For standing between my son and that monster when everyone else in that ballroom was looking away."
May you like
Claire smiled warmly, watching Daniel pick Noah up and swing him over his shoulders as the boy shrieked with delight.
"You don't need to thank me, Michael," Claire said gently. "Family isn't about the name on the building or the money in the bank. It’s about who stands by you when the doors fly open."
