Chapter 10 - The Mistress of the Mansion

Six months later.
The spring sun shone bright over the Valente estate, illuminating the rolling green lawns, the manicured rose gardens, and the pristine white stone fountains.
The grand ballroom was filled to capacity. Three hundred people stood in quiet, reverent rows—the capos of the East Coast, the regional bosses from Chicago and Miami, corrupt senators, and high-society elites who had traveled across the country to attend the wedding of the century.
At the front of the ballroom stood Adrienne Valente. He wore a custom midnight-blue tuxedo, his hair neatly styled, his posture broad, imposing, and lethal. But his eyes were fixed entirely on the double oak doors at the back of the room.
The heavy doors swung open.
Walking down the velvet aisle, accompanied by a string quartet playing a triumphant classical melody, was Elena Marquez.
She was a breathtaking vision of royal elegance. Her wedding dress was a magnificent ivory silk gown designed to honor her natural, gorgeous curves—a sweeping off-the-shoulder lace bodice, a structured waistline, and a massive, fifteen-foot train that glided over the parquet floor where she had once carried heavy trays. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant crown braided with fresh, brilliant yellow roses.
She didn't keep her eyes down.
She walked with her head held high, her shoulders back, her dark brown eyes shining with supreme confidence as the most powerful men in North America bowed their heads as she passed.
She reached the altar.
Adrienne stepped down from the platform, taking her hand in his. He didn't wait for the priest to give instructions. He raised her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles in front of the entire underworld.
The priest began the ceremony, his voice echoing through the grand hall.
"Do you, Adrienne Valente, take Elena Marquez to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, until death do you part?"
Adrienne looked into Elena’s brown eyes, his voice deep, firm, and resonant, echoing off the mahogany walls.
"I do," Adrienne declared. "I give her my life, my empire, and my absolute loyalty forever."
"And do you, Elena Marquez, take Adrienne Valente to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
Elena smiled softly, her fingers tightening around his broad hand.
"I do," Elena said clearly, her voice reaching every corner of the room. "With all my heart."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Adrienne didn't hesitate. He pulled Elena into his arms, dipping her low over his knee, kissing her with a deep, passionate intensity that brought the entire room into a roaring, standing ovation.
That evening, as the grand reception roared in the ballroom below, Elena stood on the covered stone terrace on the third floor, holding a crystal glass of sparkling cider.
The night air was sweet with the scent of blooming jasmine and wet spring earth.
Heavy leather boots clicked quietly against the stone behind her.
Adrienne walked out onto the terrace, wearing his unbuttoned tuxedo jacket, his bow tie hanging loosely around his neck. He walked up behind her, wrapping his massive arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"Are you tired, my Queen?" Adrienne whispered into her ear.
Elena leaned her head back against his shoulder, looking out at the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline in the distance.
"Not at all," Elena said softly, a deep, peaceful contentment filling her heart. "I was just remembering the first time I stood on this terrace with a bus tub full of dirty glasses."
Adrienne smiled against her neck, his hands resting over her stomach, feeling the steady rhythm of her breathing.
"That maid is gone, Elena," Adrienne murmured softly. "You own this house now."
Elena turned in his arms, facing him, her hands resting on his broad chest, her canary yellow diamond sparkling beneath the starlight.
May you like
"No, Adrienne," Elena said softly, looking up into his amber eyes with a quiet, brilliant smile. "The maid is still here. She just knows that the heaviest thing she will ever have to carry... is your love."
Adrienne laughed—one of his rare, low, private laughs that filled the night with warmth—and pulled his wife close, kissing her beneath the quiet stars of their kingdom.
