Chapter 7 - The Master of the House

Every head in the conservatory snapped upward.
Standing on the dark second-story iron balcony, looking down into the room like an ancient, vengeful god, was Adrienne Valente.
He was not in Long Island. He was wearing his black tactical suit, his heavy leather holsters strapped across his broad chest, two customized weapons resting at his hips. Flanking him on the balcony were eight of his top Valente enforcers, all armed with suppressed assault rifles pointed directly at Frank Rossi and his men.
Victoria gasped, her face turning as white as the marble statues around her. She dropped the silver butter knife; it clattered loudly against the stone floor.
"Adrienne!" Victoria stammered, her voice high and panicked. "What... what are you doing back? I thought you were in Long Island!"
Adrienne didn't answer her immediately. He walked down the winding wrought-iron staircase with slow, deliberate, silent steps. Every crunch of his boots against the iron steps sounded like a death sentence echoing through the glass dome.
He reached the marble floor, stepping directly between Victoria and Elena.
He didn't look at Victoria. He turned his back on her entirely, stepping up to Elena, his broad frame shielding her completely from the armed mercenaries.
"Are you alright?" Adrienne asked softly, his amber eyes scanning her face, his voice filled with a quiet, fierce tenderness that made Victoria’s stomach drop into a bottomless pit.
"I am fine, Adrienne," Elena replied calmly.
Adrienne reached out, his thick fingers gently touching her chin, checking for any marks or bruises before turning around to face his fiancée.
The moment he turned, the tenderness vanished. His face was a terrifying mask of ruthless, sociopathic iron.
"Adrienne, listen to me!" Victoria pleaded, taking a desperate step forward, her hands raised in defense. "This maid... she was stealing from my room! Frank caught her! We were just trying to handle household security without bothering you!"
Adrienne let out a low, cold laugh that made the mercenaries in the doorway shudder.
"Do you take me for an idiot, Victoria?" Adrienne asked softly.
He pulled a dark leather folder from inside his jacket and tossed it onto the stone tea table. It popped open, spilling dozens of surveillance photographs, bank transfer manifests, and encrypted communication transcripts across the marble top.
"Forty-Fourth Street warehouse," Adrienne stated coldly, stepping closer to her. "The Chicago distribution keys. Your father’s secret contract with the Marcone family."
Victoria looked down at the photographs. Her breath hitched. Her lips trembled as she realized the full extent of the nightmare unfolding around her.
"You... you knew?" Victoria whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I knew three weeks ago," Adrienne said. "I let you stay in my house because I wanted to see how far your father’s stupidity extended. But you made a fatal mistake, Victoria."
Adrienne took another step forward, towering over her, his massive presence pressing down on her like a crushing weight.
"You put your filthy hands on my woman," Adrienne growled, his voice dropping into a terrifying register.
Victoria’s eyes widened in total, blinding horror as she looked from Adrienne to Elena, who stood quietly behind him, her hands folded neatly over her dark sweater.
"Her?" Victoria choked out, her voice hysterical. "A maid?! You're burning a multi-billion-dollar alliance for a useless, pathetic maid?!"
Adrienne’s hand shot out like a striking viper.

He grabbed Victoria by the throat—not hard enough to crush her windpipe, but firm enough to lift her onto her tiptoes, forcing her to look directly into his terrifying amber eyes.
"She has more dignity in her pinky finger than your entire family possesses in their bloodline," Adrienne whispered darkly into her ear. "She protected this house while you tried to sell it."
