Chapter 9 - The Crown of Roses

The rain had stopped outside, leaving the night sky clear and filled with brilliant, cold autumn stars.
Silence settled over the conservatory—a warm, peaceful silence that smelled of crushed night-blooming jasmine and damp stone.
Adrienne turned toward Elena.
He didn't speak. He reached out, taking her hands in his massive, warm palms. He looked down at her fingers—at the small calluses from years of hard work, at the pale skin that had carried the weight of his household without a single complaint.
"You were incredible," Adrienne whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
Elena looked up into his eyes, a small, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in weeks. "I was terrified."
"You didn't show it," Adrienne said. He raised her right hand to his lips, pressing a slow, tender kiss against her knuckles. "You stood before armed men and didn't bow your head for a single second."
"I learned it from watching you," Elena murmured softly.
Adrienne let out a low, soft sigh. He reached into his tactical vest, pulling out a small velvet box that he had carried with him all night.
He opened it.
Inside rested a simple, breathtaking ring—a flawless oval-cut canary yellow diamond set in an intricate band of carved white gold.
Elena stared at the ring, her breath catching in her throat. "Adrienne..."
"Yellow," Adrienne said softly, a dark, handsome smile touching his lips. "Because you said yellow made the hallway feel warm. Because you replaced the cheap white roses with something real."
He stepped closer, his heavy frame wrapping around her, bringing her broad, soft body flush against his chest.
"I spent five years watching you walk through my halls, Elena," Adrienne whispered into her dark hair, his voice shaking with a vulnerability he had never shown to another human being. "I watched you carry trays that were too heavy. I watched you clean up after people who weren't worthy to breathe the same air as you. And every single night, I sat in my office and hated myself because I thought I couldn't give you the life you deserved."
Tears welled up in Elena’s brown eyes, spilling over her cheeks, but they were not tears of pain.
"I never wanted an empire, Adrienne," Elena whispered, her hands resting against his dark cheeks, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jawline. "I only wanted you."
"You have me," Adrienne swore softly, his amber eyes locked onto hers with absolute, terrifying devotion. "You have my heart, my life, my family, and every single street in this city. You will never carry another tray. You will never hide in the shadows. You will sit beside me as my wife, my Don, and my absolute equal."
He slipped the canary yellow diamond ring onto her left finger. It fit perfectly.

Adrienne leaned down, wrapping his massive arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet, and brought his lips down onto hers—a deep, fierce, possessive kiss that tasted of rain, victory, and an unyielding, unbreakable love.
Elena wrapped her arms around his broad neck, holding onto him tight, letting the ghost she had been for five years melt away into the warm, secure arms of the man who ruled her heart.
