Chapter 5 - The Midnight Message

At two o'clock in the morning, the mansion was shrouded in deep darkness.
Elena slipped out of her bed in the staff quarters. She didn't wear her grey maid's uniform. She wore dark denim jeans, a black cotton sweater, and soft-soled sneakers that made no sound against the wooden floorboards.
She knew the layout of the Valente mansion better than anyone living inside it. She knew which floorboards creaked on the grand staircase, which servant doors had oiled hinges, and where the security cameras had blind spots along the east wing.
She moved like a shadow through the third-floor corridor, heading toward Adrienne’s private office.
Adrienne had returned from Brooklyn at midnight. She had heard his heavy leather boots coming up the stairs, followed by the deep rumble of his voice as he dismissed his bodyguard, Marco, for the night.
She reached his heavy oak door. She didn't knock. A knock would echo down the quiet hallway and alert Victoria’s security team posted at the end of the hall.
Instead, she slid a thin piece of brass metal into the latch, popping the lock with a faint, silent click, and slipped inside the dark office, closing the door behind her.
The room smelled of old leather, expensive tobacco, and rain.
A single desk lamp burned low on the massive mahogany desk in the center of the room. Sitting behind the desk, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck, his jacket thrown over the back of his chair, was Adrienne.
He didn't look surprised.
Before she had even taken two steps into the room, Adrienne had drawn a sleek black Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster, pointing it directly at her heart with terrifying speed.
Then he recognized her.
"Elena?" Adrienne lowered the weapon instantly, setting it down on his blotter. His eyebrows furrowed with deep concern as he stood up from his chair. "What are you doing in here? If my guards see you in my private wing at this hour—"
"Victoria is going to kill you," Elena interrupted, her voice a sharp, urgent whisper.
Adrienne froze. His amber eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Elena stepped closer to the desk, her face pale but resolute. "She is betraying you. Her father signed a secret deal with the Marcone family last week in Chicago. They are staging a supply takeover at a warehouse on Forty-Fourth Street."
Adrienne’s jaw clenched hard. He didn't interrupt her. He stood perfectly still, his eyes fixed on her face as she laid out the facts.
"The engagement is a cover," Elena continued, her words coming rapid and clear. "Once you sign over the regional distribution keys at the spring gala, the Laurents and the Marcones will cut the Valente family out completely. They are planning a full hostile takeover of your East Coast routes."
Silence stretched across the dark office. The heavy grandfather clock in the corner ticked methodically.
Adrienne walked around his desk, stopping two feet away from her. His expression was completely unreadable—a mask of cold, terrifying granite.
"How do you know this?" Adrienne asked softly.
"I was cleaning the moldings behind the velvet drapes in the library this afternoon," Elena explained. "Victoria was speaking with her security chief, Frank Rossi. I heard every word."
Adrienne stared at her. "Frank Rossi..."
"And there's more," Elena said, her voice dropping into a small, fragile tone that she couldn't quite control.
Adrienne stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch her arm. "Tell me."
"Victoria knows you look at me," Elena whispered, looking down at his dark chest. "She knows... she knows I matter to you. She ordered Frank Rossi to have me taken out to New Jersey next week. She ordered them to kill me before the wedding."
Adrienne’s hand on her arm went rigid as iron.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop by twenty degrees. A terrifying, sociopathic darkness flared deep within Adrienne’s amber eyes—a violent, apocalyptic rage that made the very air feel heavy and metallic.
"She ordered what?" Adrienne growled, his voice dropping into a register so low it vibrated through the floorboards beneath their feet.
"She told Frank to dig a hole in the Pine Barrens," Elena said, looking up into his face. "Adrienne... she means it. She’s going to execute the plan in three days."
Adrienne didn't speak for five long seconds.
Then, slowly, deliberately, he raised his hand and brought it to the side of her face. His long fingers cupped her cheek, his thumb gently stroking her skin, catching a single tear that had escaped her eye.
"No one is going to touch you, Elena," Adrienne whispered, his voice laced with an absolute, terrifying promise. "No one."
He pulled her toward him, leaning down until his forehead rested against hers.
"I knew Victoria was playing games," Adrienne admitted softly, his breath warm against her lips. "I had my men monitoring her father's accounts in Chicago. But I didn't know about the Marcone deal... and I didn't know she threatened your life."
"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, her hands resting against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart.
May you like
Adrienne lifted his head, his cold amber eyes shining in the dim lamplight with a dark, ruthless intelligence.
"I’m going to let her execute her plan," Adrienne said softly. "I’m going to let her think she’s trapped you. And then I’m going to tear her empire down to the dirt."
