Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Library

The following week, the atmosphere inside the Valente mansion grew thick and suffocating.

Victoria Laurent moved her personal security team into the guest wing—four broad-shouldered mercenaries from Chicago who wore dark suits, carried concealed weapons, and treated the local Valente staff with open contempt.

Adrienne was absent for three straight days, locked in emergency meetings at the docks down in Brooklyn where a shipment of smuggled European luxury cars had been seized by federal agents.

Without Adrienne’s physical presence to balance the scales, Victoria took total control of the household. She altered meal schedules, fired two elderly kitchen staff members who had served the Valente family for twenty years, and assigned Elena to the most grueling, grueling tasks in the mansion—cleaning the grand chandeliers, scrubbing the attic floors, and polishing the brass railings until her hands bled.

Elena did not complain once. She did every task precisely, quietly, and efficiently.

Because while she worked, she listened.

Being a maid meant being a fixture of the background. People spoke over her as if she were a carpet or a lamp. They made phone calls while she dusted bookshelves; they discussed business strategy while she poured coffee.

On Thursday afternoon, while Adrienne was still in Brooklyn, Victoria sat in the private second-floor library with her chief of security—a heavily scarred man named Frank Rossi.

Elena was behind the high velvet drapes near the far window, using a long feather duster to clean the top carved moldings of the mahogany bookcases.

"Is the shipment ready?" Victoria asked, her voice low and brisk.

"It’s staged at the warehouse on Forty-Fourth Street," Frank replied in a gravelly tone. "Your father’s crew in Chicago is ready to receive the manifest as soon as the Valente family transfers the regional distribution keys."

Elena froze behind the velvet drape. Her feather duster stopped in mid-air.

"And Adrienne?" Victoria asked, the sound of her silver spoon clinking against her china teacup echoing in the quiet room. "Does he suspect anything?"

Frank let out a low chuckle. "He thinks he’s securing a political marriage to expand his territory. He has no idea your father signed a back-room deal with the Marcone family last week. Once the engagement is finalized and the distribution keys are signed over at the spring gala, the Valente Syndicate will be completely cut out of the East Coast supply chain."

"Good," Victoria said coldly. "Adrienne is too stubborn. He thinks he’s untouchable. He looks down on my family like we're Midwestern peasants."

She paused, taking a slow sip of her tea.

"What about the maid?" Frank asked suddenly. "The dark-haired one. You told me to keep an eye on her."

Victoria snapped her teacup back down onto its saucer with a sharp clack.

"She’s a nuisance," Victoria spat. "Adrienne looks at her like she’s something precious. It makes my skin crawl. Once the keys are transferred and the merger is complete, I want her removed from the house permanently."

"Fired?" Frank asked.

"No," Victoria said, her voice dropping into an icy, merciless pitch that made the blood freeze in Elena’s veins. "Fired women talk. Have your men take her out to the Pine Barrens in New Jersey and dig a hole. Make sure she vanishes before the wedding."

Elena stood behind the drape, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her breath caught in her throat, but she didn't make a sound. She pressed her back against the cool glass of the windowpane, her fingers locked tight around the wooden handle of the duster.

"Understood," Frank said. "I’ll handle it quietly next week."

They stood up, the sound of Frank’s heavy boots and Victoria’s heels echoing across the hardwood floor as they exited the library into the main hallway.

Elena stepped out from behind the velvet drapes. Her face was deathly pale, her chest heaving as she took in rapid, shuddering gulps of air.

She knew Victoria was ruthless, but she hadn't realized the depth of the betrayal. Victoria wasn't just marrying Adrienne for power—she and her father were planning to destroy the Valente Syndicate from the inside out, aligning with their mortal enemies, the Marcones.

And Elena was scheduled to die in a Jersey forest in less than seven days.

May you like

She looked toward the door of the library. She needed to tell Adrienne. But Adrienne was in Brooklyn, surrounded by guards, and Victoria’s men watched every exit of the mansion twenty-four hours a day.

Elena lowered her duster. The time for disappearing was over.
