Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The drive to the city was a blur of neon lights and adrenaline. I kept the heater off, the cold air hitting my face, keeping me sharp. I had chosen a nondescript sedan from the rental fleet, one that wasn't tied to the Blackwood tracking database.

I wasn't just running; I was disappearing.

Every turn, every stop sign felt like a victory. I thought back to the last two years—the gaslighting, the subtle ways Derek had eroded my self-esteem, the "accidental" missed calls, the way he made me feel like I was lucky to have him. It was a classic trap. I had been the perfect trophy, and he had been the perfect captor.

But he had made one fatal error. He had underestimated the woman he thought he had broken.

He didn't know about the secret files. Six months ago, I had stumbled upon a ledger hidden in his home office. It wasn't just accounting for the family’s construction business; it was a map of money laundering, bribery, and state-level corruption. I had spent months duplicating those files, encrypting them, and uploading them to a dead-drop server.

If he touched me, if he came after me, the files would automatically distribute to the Chicago Tribune, the FBI, and the state attorney.

I stopped at a 24-hour diner in a lonely part of the suburbs to grab coffee and check the news. Nothing yet. The Blackwoods were trying to bury it, trying to pretend this was just a "domestic dispute."

I watched the door. I watched every car that pulled into the parking lot.

My phone vibrated. It was a message from an unknown number. They're looking for the car, Chloe. Switch to the train at the next junction.

I didn't ask how they knew. I just finished my coffee, left a twenty-dollar bill on the table, and walked out into the dark.
