Chapter 7 - The Witness

Her name was Maya. She was a waitress in a diner three towns over. When I found her, she was terrified. She hadn't seen her father in years, and she was living under a pseudonym.

"They told me he was in witness protection," she said, her voice shaking. "But I never believed it. They came to my house. They told me if I ever asked questions, I'd end up like him."

"He's alive," I told her. "But he’s not well. I can get you to him. But I need your help first."

We sat in my cabin, the fire crackling in the background. I showed her the files. I showed her the pattern of land grabs that had destroyed her father’s career.

"They did this to everyone," I said. "They aren't just greedy. They're monsters."

Maya looked at the files for a long time. Her fear slowly began to transform into something sharper.

"My father wasn't a criminal," she whispered. "He was a decent man who tried to report them. They made it look like he was the one taking bribes."

"Help me clear his name," I said. "And we take them down."
