Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

They found us.
It was inevitable. We were sloppy, or they were better than we thought. A black SUV rolled up to the cabin at 3:00 AM.
I grabbed the bag. "Maya, get out the back! Go to the truck. Get to the safe house."
"What about you?"
"I’m the distraction," I said, handing her the laptop. "Everything is on there. If I don't make it, upload it. All of it."
I ran out the front door, shouting, hoping to pull them away from her.
They swarmed the front of the cabin. I dived into the trees, the underbrush tearing at my clothes. I could hear them calling out, their flashlights slicing through the dark.
I reached the clearing where I had hidden my own backup vehicle—a beat-up motorcycle.
I heard a shot. A bullet hit a tree near my head.
I kicked the starter, the engine roaring to life, and sped off into the mountain road, the headlights of the SUV behind me.

I drove like a madwoman, the wind screaming in my ears. I didn't know where I was going, just away. I pulled a sharp turn onto an old logging path, the SUV losing traction on the loose gravel.
I didn't stop until I saw the highway lights miles ahead.
