Chapter 6 - Shadows in the South

I arrived in a small town in Tennessee, a place where people didn't ask questions and the mountains provided a perfect screen. I rented a cabin on the outskirts of town, paid in cash, and kept my head down.

For the first few days, I did nothing but sleep. The trauma was catching up. I had vivid dreams of Derek walking into the room, of the grease staining my face, of the sound of that lock clicking shut.

I began to research the Blackwood corruption from the safety of my cabin. I used public records, satellite imagery, and municipal permit filings. I started to map the connections. It wasn't just construction; it was a massive, state-wide scheme involving water rights and land seizures.

Derek was just the face of it. The real power was his mother, Brenda.

I started writing. I didn't publish anything yet, but I created a blog, a repository of every document, every email, every contract I had managed to pull. I called it The Blackwood Ledger.

I needed more than just files. I needed a witness.

I found a name in the ledger—a former project manager who had been fired and "disappeared" three years ago. I spent days hunting for him, using the resources the man on the train had provided.

I finally found him in a nursing home in Missouri, suffering from early-onset dementia. It was a dead end.

Or it would have been, if I hadn't found his daughter.
