Chapter 8 - The Counter-Attack

The plan was simple but suicidal. We would leak the information in waves. First, the construction fraud. Then, the bribery. Finally, the environmental crimes. We wouldn't go to the police; we’d go to the regulators, the contractors, and the unions.

The reaction was immediate. Within 48 hours, the Blackwood construction sites were picketed. Work stopped. Contracts were canceled.
Derek and Brenda were hemorrhaging money.

I checked my burner phone. A message from Derek. I know you're out there, Chloe. Come back, and we can fix this. You don't know what you're doing. You're going to get yourself killed.
I didn't reply.
Then came the next wave: the zoning permits. We leaked the documents showing that the Blackwoods had been bribing city officials to seize property from elderly residents.
