Chapter 10 - THE BOSS'S HEART

One year later.
The grand foyer of Calder House was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp autumn afternoon.
The annual Calder Foundation exhibition was in full swing, with hundreds of guests, community leaders, and scholarship families milling through the halls, admiring the student art displays and celebrating another record-breaking year of community grants.
Elena stood near the central balcony on the second floor, looking down at the vibrant crowd.
She wore an exquisite emerald green gown that draped elegantly around her figure, her dark hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. The diamond-studded silver orchid pin gleamed brightly on her lapel.
Warm, strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest.
Vincent rested his chin gently on her shoulder, his breathing soft against her neck.
"You look breathtaking, Mrs. Director," Vincent whispered, his voice low and rich.
Elena leaned back into his embrace, placing her hands over his on her waist, smiling up at him. "The event is a complete success, Mr. Boss."
"Every event you touch is a success," Vincent murmured, kissing the side of her neck gently, making her shiver with delight.
Down below in the foyer, a small group of scholarship children were gathered around the grand entrance.
In the exact spot where the original cardboard cutout had stood two years ago, a beautiful, polished bronze plaque was now mounted on the marble wall, commemorating the foundation's founders.
Standing right in front of it was seven-year-old Sophie, wearing a bright yellow dress, holding the hand of a little boy from the neighborhood, pointing up at the plaque with authority.
"And that's where I kissed him!" Sophie was telling the boy loudly enough for half the foyer to hear. "Right on his big grumpy face!"
Down on the floor, Frank and two security guards stood nearby, desperately biting their lips to suppress their laughter, while Victoria stood beside them, smiling fondly at her granddaughter.
Vincent let out a quiet, deep laugh against Elena’s neck—that same rusty, wonderful sound that had changed everything two years ago.
"She's never going to let me live that down, is she?" Vincent chuckled.
"Never," Elena smiled, turning around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his dark neck, looking up into his clear grey eyes. "It’s part of the family history now."
Vincent looked down at her, his expression softening into a look of absolute, unshakeable devotion. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a delicate, shimmering diamond band designed to match her silver orchid pin.
"Elena," Vincent said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You took a cold, dangerous man living in a dark house and gave him a home. You and Sophie are my heart, my life, and my protection. Will you marry me?"
Elena stared at the ring, tears of pure joy springing to her eyes. She looked up at the powerful, dangerous man who had protected her, cherished her, and loved her daughter with every drop of his soul.
"Yes," Elena whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Vincent. Absolutely yes."
Vincent slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her close, dipping her gently as he kissed her deeply right there on the balcony, in full view of the entire grand hall below.
Down in the foyer, Sophie clapped her hands frantically, jumping up and down in her yellow dress.

"Look, everybody!" Sophie shouted excitedly, her voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "The scary man isn't scary anymore!"
The entire room erupted into warm applause and cheers, while high above them, Vincent Calder simply held his wife tight, smiling into the warm autumn light of the home they had built together.
