Chapter 8 - THE PROTECTOR

By 2:00 a.m., the safe house—a luxurious, highly fortified private penthouse on the top floor of a secure high-rise in downtown Pittsburgh—was locked down under maximum security protocols.

Twenty armed guards patrolled the building’s perimeter, lobby, and private elevators.

In the master living room, Elena sat on a wide velvet sofa wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a mug of chamomile tea. She had finally stopped shaking, though the adrenaline still hummed through her veins.

The private elevator doors chimed open.

Vincent stepped out. He had changed into a dark turtleneck sweater and dark trousers. His hands were clean, but the deadly aura surrounding him had not dissipated.

He walked into the living room, stopping in front of her, looking down at her with quiet intensity.

"Sophie is safe," Vincent said immediately, anticipating her first question. "I dispatched six of my best men to your neighbor's house an hour ago. Mrs. Gable and Sophie were moved to my sister's secure estate in the countryside. They are fast asleep, completely unaware of what happened tonight."

Elena let out a massive, shuddering breath, resting her forehead against her hand. "Thank you. God, thank you, Vincent."

Vincent knelt on the floor in front of her, resting his large hands on her knees.

"Sterling's organization is being systematically dismantled as we speak," Vincent said quietly, his voice cold and absolute. "By morning, his shipping licenses will be revoked, his bank accounts frozen, and his key lieutenants taken into federal custody. He will never be a threat to you, your daughter, or this city again."

Elena looked down into his deep grey eyes, seeing the immense weight he carried every single day—the burden of protecting hundreds of people, of managing a dangerous legacy, of living in a world where peace was bought with constant vigilance.

"Did you do all of that tonight?" Elena asked softly.

"I do whatever is necessary to keep my people safe," Vincent said plainly. He reached up, gently taking the tea mug from her hands and setting it on the coffee table. He cupped both sides of her face with his warm, strong hands. "When I saw those bullet marks on the glass near your head tonight, Elena... my heart stopped. I have fought men, prosecutors, and armies in my life, but I have never known real terror until I thought I might lose you."

Elena’s eyes filled with soft tears. She reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him down until he was resting against her chest.

"You didn't lose me," Elena whispered softly into his hair. "You saved me. Frank saved us. You're my protector, Vincent."

May you like

Vincent closed his eyes, holding her tiny frame against his broad chest, breathing in her soft scent, letting the quiet warmth of her love slowly melt away the cold, violent rage that had possessed him all night.

They lay together on the wide velvet sofa as the rain began to fall against the reinforced floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the dark city lights flicker below them, safe in the center of the storm.
