Chapter 4 - AFTER THE CURTAIN FALLS

By 1:00 a.m., the grand ballroom was quiet once again.

The last of the luxury towncars had pulled away down the winding estate driveway. The orchestra had packed away their instruments, the catering staff had cleared the final champagne glasses, and the heavy oak front doors of Calder House were locked and deadbolted for the night.

The gala had been a staggering success. Preliminary counts showed over six point two million dollars raised—a new record for the foundation.

Elena sat on the bottom step of the grand marble staircase in the empty, dimly lit foyer. Her high heels were off, sitting neatly on the step beside her. She pulled her hair pins out, letting her long, wavy brown hair fall around her shoulders with a soft sigh of relief.

Footsteps echoed softly across the marble.

Vincent walked into the foyer, having discarded his tuxedo jacket and bow tie. His top three shirt buttons were undone, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking effortlessly handsome in the soft ambient lighting. He carried a small crystal glass filled with amber bourbon in one hand and a bottle of mineral water in the other.

He stopped at the base of the stairs, looking down at her bare feet.

"Rough night on the heels?" he asked softly.

"Cruel night," Elena smiled, taking the bottle of water he offered her. "Thank you. For everything. The night was... incredible."

Vincent sat down on the marble step beside her. He didn't sit at a distance; he sat close enough that his warm shoulder brushed gently against hers through the thin fabric of her dress.

"You brought order to chaos, Elena," Vincent said, taking a sip of his bourbon. "The board was unanimous tonight. They want to make your position permanent. Director of Events and Operations for the entire foundation. Double your current salary, full executive benefits, and a private office on the main floor."

Elena froze, her water bottle halfway to her mouth. She turned her head quickly to look at him. "Double? Vincent... I... I don't know what to say. Are you serious?"

"I don't joke about business, Elena," Vincent said, his grey eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You managed a six-million-dollar production without flinching. You stood up to board members, vendors, and unruly donors. You deserve the position. More importantly, I want you here."

Elena looked down at her hands, a deep wave of emotion washing over her. Two years of struggling, of counting every penny at the grocery store, of worrying about whether she could afford Sophie’s speech therapy classes or summer camp—all of it seemed to lift off her shoulders in a single moment. Tears prickled at the corners of her eyes.

"Hey," Vincent said softly.

He set his glass down on the step behind him. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently catching a stray tear that slipped down her cheek, his thumb softly brushing against her skin.

"Don't cry," he murmured, his voice dropping into a thick, low tone.

"I'm sorry," Elena wiped her eye quickly, laughing nervously. "I'm just... it's been a very long time since anyone gave me a real break. Since someone believed I could do this."

"People are blind," Vincent said firmly, his thumb lingering against her cheekbone, his palm cupping the side of her face. "You are remarkable, Elena. Stronger than anyone in this building gives you credit for."

Elena looked up into his dark eyes. The distance between them had completely evaporated. She could feel the heat radiating off his body, smell the dark, addictive scent of his cologne mixed with bourbon. Her breath hitches in her throat as his eyes drifted down to her lips.

For a second, the whole world stopped. The powerful crime boss, the rumors, the danger—none of it existed. There was only the quiet marble hall and the intense, magnetic pull between them.

Vincent slowly leaned in, his lips inches from hers.

BZZZZZ.

The sudden, loud vibration of Elena’s phone on the marble step broke the spell instantly.

Elena gasped, pulling back slightly, her face flushing crimson. She picked up her phone with trembling hands. The screen displayed a text from her babysitter.

Mrs. Gable: Hi Elena! Sophie woke up asking for a glass of water. She’s fine, but just letting you know I'm still up whenever you get back!

Elena cleared her throat nervously, standing up from the step, holding her shoes in one hand. "I... I need to get home. Mrs. Gable is waiting, and Sophie will be awake early."

Vincent stood up slowly, stepping back, his face returning to a masked, calm composure, though his dark eyes burned with an undeniable flame.

"I'll have Frank drive you home," Vincent said softly.

"Oh, no, I can drive my own car—"

"It's two in the morning, Elena. You're exhausted," Vincent said, leaving no room for argument. "Frank will drive you in the towncar, and another driver will follow with your vehicle so it's in your driveway tomorrow morning."

Elena looked at him, touched by the quiet, fierce care behind his command. "Thank you, Vincent."

He stepped closer, offering her a soft, almost imperceptible smile. "Go home to your daughter, Elena. We'll sign your new contract on Monday."

May you like

Elena walked toward the main entrance, stopping at the double doors. She turned back to look at him one last time.

Vincent was standing in the center of the dark foyer, watching her leave, looking every bit the quiet king of his empire.
