Chapter 6 - THE RIVAL's MOVE

By Wednesday afternoon, the quiet tension following Victoria's visit had settled into a steady work rhythm.

Elena spent the day coordinating the foundation’s autumn youth mentoring initiative. She was sitting at her desk reviewing budget spreadsheets when her office phone rang.

"Elena Brooks," she answered.

"Ms. Brooks," a sleek, unfamiliar male voice came through the line. "My name is Arthur Sterling. I'm the managing director for Sterling Enterprises."

Elena paused. Sterling Enterprises was the primary business rival to Calder’s shipping and logistics operations—a company known for aggressive corporate takeovers and shady political lobbying.

"Mr. Sterling," Elena said cautiously. "How can I help you?"

"I'm calling to offer my formal congratulations on the gala," Sterling said, his tone dripping with polished, insincere charm. "Six point two million is an extraordinary result. A coordinator of your rare talent is entirely wasted managing small charity dinners for Vincent Calder."

Elena narrowed her eyes. "I'm very satisfied with my position here, Mr. Sterling."

"Are you?" Sterling chuckled softly. "Even with the Calder family's dark reputation hanging over your head? I'm prepared to offer you triple your current salary, a senior vice president title at Sterling Events, and a private budget to design any corporate functions you choose. No mafia rumors, no dangerous family politics. Just pure corporate luxury."

Elena didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Thank you for the call, Mr. Sterling," Elena said coldly. "But my answer is no. Good day."

She hung up the phone before he could respond.

Ten minutes later, her office door swung open. Vincent stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. His expression was serious, his eyes sharp.

"Frank told me Sterling called your direct line," Vincent said, closing the door behind him.

Elena looked up, slightly surprised by his intelligence network. "Yes. He offered me a job."

Vincent stepped up to her desk, leaning against the wood, looking down at her carefully. "And?"

"And I hung up on him," Elena said simply.

Vincent’s gaze softened slightly, a rare flicker of relief passing through his dark eyes. "Sterling isn't just looking for an event coordinator, Elena. He’s looking for leverage against me. He knows you're close to the foundation's core operations now. He will try to use money, pressure, or threats to get to you."

"He can try whatever he likes," Elena said, standing up to meet his gaze. "I don't betray people who treat me with respect."

Vincent stared at her for a long moment. He slowly reached out, his hand touching her cheek, his thumb gently caressing her skin.

"My mother came to see you on Monday," Vincent stated quietly.

Elena blinked. "You know about that?"

"I heard her," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a deep, dark register filled with genuine remorse. "I apologize for her behavior, Elena. She thinks she is protecting an empire, but she has forgotten how to treat good people. I spoke to her privately on Tuesday. She will not bother you again."

Elena felt a warm wave of gratitude flood her chest. "Thank you, Vincent. But I can fight my own battles."

"I know you can," Vincent said softly, stepping closer, his hand drifting down to cup the back of her neck, pulling her gently toward him. "That's precisely what frightens me about you. You don't need my power. You just choose to be near me."

Elena looked up into his eyes, her breath catching as his head lowered.

This time, there was no phone vibration, no interruption.

Vincent’s lips met hers in a deep, slow, breathtaking kiss. It was possessive, powerful, yet extraordinarily gentle—a promise made in the quiet center of a dangerous world. Elena’s hands slid up his dark suit jacket, her fingers tangling in the soft hair at the nape of his neck, leaning into his strength completely.

When he finally pulled back, both of their breaths were ragged. Vincent rested his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with an intense, unyielding affection.

"Come to dinner with me tonight," Vincent murmured against her lips. "Not at the estate. At a private restaurant down by the river. Just you and me."

Elena smiled, her heart soaring. "I'd love that."
