Chapter 7 - DANGER AT THE DOCKS

The private restaurant was tucked away near the historical riverfront docks—a high-end, discreet establishment accessible only by private invitation, featuring soft jazz, warm brick walls, and panoramic windows overlooking the glowing lights of the Monongahela River.
Dinner had been perfection. Away from the pressure of Calder House, Vincent was attentive, surprisingly funny, and deeply interested in every detail of Elena’s life, her dreams, and her stories about Sophie.
It was 10:30 p.m. when they stepped out of the restaurant's rear private exit into the cool night air.
Frank was waiting near the sleek black armored SUV parked in the cobblestone alleyway.
"Great night, boss?" Frank asked with a warm smile as he opened the rear door for Elena.
"An excellent night, Frank," Vincent said, helping Elena into the leather interior.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp metallic crack echoed through the alleyway, followed instantly by the shattering of a streetlamp overhead.
"SNIPER! DOWN!" Frank roared, drawing his weapon in a fraction of a second, shoving Vincent hard into the rear seat of the SUV beside Elena, slamming the heavy armored door shut.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Heavy, high-caliber rifle rounds slammed into the bulletproof glass and reinforced steel doors of the vehicle, spider-webbing the thick glass but failing to penetrate.
Elena gasped, thrown onto the floorboards, Vincent’s massive frame instantly covering her body like an impenetrable shield, holding her tight against his chest.
"Stay down! Don't move!" Vincent commanded, his voice cold, calm, and entirely devoid of panic, though his body was tense as iron.
Outside, rapid gunfire erupted as Frank and two other hidden security vehicles returned heavy fire toward an adjacent warehouse roof. The violent staccato of automatic weapons filled the narrow alleyway, echoing off the brick walls like thunder.
Elena buried her face against Vincent’s neck, her heart hammering wildly in her chest, holding onto his shirt with all her strength.
"I have you," Vincent whispered fiercely in her ear, his arm locked around her waist, his body completely absorbing any potential impact. "I have you, Elena. You're safe."
Within ninety seconds, the gunfire stopped.
The heavy door of the SUV was opened from the outside by Frank, his weapon lowered, his breath coming in heavy gasps, a minor cut bleeding near his temple.
"Alley's clear, boss!" Frank called out urgently. "Shooters were on the south roof—two down, one fleeing toward the river. Local police are five minutes out."
Vincent sat up slowly, keeping his body positioned between the open door and Elena. His face was terrifying—carved from pure, cold, murderous rage, his eyes burning like red coals in the dark.
He reached down, gently lifting Elena up onto the leather seat, checking her hands, her face, and her shoulders with frantic, thorough care.
"Are you hurt?" Vincent demanded, his voice raspy. "Elena, look at me. Are you hit?"
"I'm... I'm okay," Elena breathed, shaking violently, her hands clutching his face. "I'm not hit. Are you?"
Vincent didn't answer. He looked out into the dark alleyway where his security team was securing the perimeter.
"It was Sterling's men," Frank stated darkly, stepping closer. "We recognized the rifle platform. They tried to take a shot at you while you were exiting."
Vincent slowly stood up from the vehicle, his towering form casting a long, dark shadow across the wet cobblestones.
"Sterling has forgotten who owns this city," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly low, deadly whisper that made even Frank stiffen in apprehension. "He targeted a night where I was with Elena."
He turned back to look at Elena, his murderous expression melting into a look of profound, aching remorse as he saw her trembling on the leather seat.
He stepped back into the SUV, wrapping his coat around her shoulders, pulling her tight into his arms as the armored vehicle sped away into the night.
"I am so sorry, Elena," Vincent whispered against her hair, his arms trembling slightly with suppressed rage and fear for her safety. "I brought you into my darkness."
May you like
Elena squeezed her eyes shut, holding onto him tight as the city lights blurred past the reinforced windows.
"I'm not leaving you, Vincent," Elena whispered back firmly, surprising herself with her own fierce certainty. "I'm not going anywhere."
