Chapter 10 - The Horizon
One year later.
The morning sun rose over the waters of Lake Geneva, Switzerland, casting a brilliant, crystal-golden light across the mountains.
I stood on the balcony of the newly opened Vance-Miller International Safety Headquarters—a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing legal protection, emergency shelter, and financial independence resources to thousands of women across Europe and North America.
Below the balcony, hundreds of guests, international delegates, and foundation leaders were gathering in the courtyard for the opening ceremony.
My sister, Sarah, walked out onto the balcony wearing a sleek white blazer, holding two glasses of sparkling juice.
"The press conference is ready for you, Emily," Sarah smiled, handing me a glass. "The Swiss delegates are already calling this the most well-funded humanitarian initiative of the decade."
"It's just the beginning, Sarah," I said, looking out over the sparkling blue lake.
My father walked out onto the balcony, dressed in his classic tailored suit, a warm, proud smile on his face as he looked at me.
"Are you ready, Emily?" my father asked softly.
I set my glass down on the stone railing, adjusted the lapel of my jacket, and looked at the two people who loved me unconditionally.
"I've been ready for a long time, Dad," I answered smoothly.
We walked down the marble staircase together, stepping out into the bright, warm sunlight of the courtyard.
The crowd erupted into sustained applause as I walked up to the podium, looking out over the faces of hundreds of people who had come to support our vision.
I looked up at the open blue sky above the mountains, feeling the gentle breeze brush against my face.
