Chapter 2 - The Command

Adrian's laugh died instantly in his throat. His brow furrowed, a flicker of genuine irritation replacing his smug composure. "Your father? That quiet little high school history teacher from Ohio who couldn't even afford to fly first class to our wedding?"

Vanessa snorted, crossing her arms. "Oh, this is pathetic. She’s calling her broke dad to come save her."

The call connected on the second ring. The speaker activated automatically, filling the quiet foyer with a low, deep voice that carried the absolute, quiet authority of a man who commanded legions without ever needing to raise his tone.

"Emily?"

Hearing my father’s voice sent a sudden, warm wave of composure through my veins. The pain in my back seemed to recede, replaced by an icy, crystal-clear focus.

"Dad," I said, my voice steady, devoid of tears or trembling. "Just as you told me three years ago... destroy his life."

The line went completely dead silent for three seconds. In those three seconds, the atmospheric pressure in the room felt as though it dropped ten degrees.

Then, my father answered with two simple, unhurried words.

"Done, sweetheart."

The call disconnected.

Adrian stared at the dark screen of my phone, then let out a sharp, incredulous breath, shaking his head. "What was that supposed to be? A dramatic performance? You think a phone call to a nobody in Ohio is going to—"

BUZZ.

Adrian’s encrypted corporate iPhone vibrated violently in his palm. He glanced down at the screen. The caller ID read: VICTOR ST. CLAIRE - MANAGING DIRECTOR, GLOBAL CAPITAL.

St. Claire was Adrian’s primary financial backer, the man whose fifty-million-dollar credit line held Carter-Vane Capital above water.

Adrian quickly composed his face, smoothing his jacket as he pressed the phone to his ear. "Victor! Good evening. I was just—"

"What the hell did you do, Carter?!" Victor St. Claire’s voice didn't just come through the speaker; it exploded out of the earpiece so loudly that Vanessa flinched. "Every single credit facility tied to your firm has been frozen by international banking compliance! The Federal Reserve just issued an emergency administrative freeze on your master accounts!"

Adrian’s face lost a shade of color. "What?! That's impossible! Victor, there's been a mistake, we signed the audit papers—"

"There is no mistake!" St. Claire roared. "Ten seconds ago, I received a direct order from the board of directors of our parent institution in Geneva! They didn't just freeze your lines, Adrian—they revoked our firm's banking license! If my capital is dragged down into whatever nuclear crater you just walked into, I will personally see you rot in a federal penitentiary! Don't ever call this number again!"

CLICK.

Adrian stood frozen, his arm slowly dropping to his side. The color was draining from his cheeks with terrifying speed.

"Adrian?" Vanessa asked, her voice losing its smug sweetness, replaced by a sharp edge of anxiety. "What did he mean? Why is he yelling?"

Before Adrian could answer, his phone vibrated again. Then it chimed with an incoming email notification. Then another. Then three consecutive text messages. Within ten seconds, the device in his hand began ringing continuously, the screen lighting up like a strobe light in the dim foyer.

BUZZ. BUZZ. BUZZ.

"Answer it, Adrian," I whispered from the floor, wiping the blood from my chin with the back of my hand. "It might be important."
