Chapter 3 - The Evaporation

With trembling fingers, Adrian raised the phone to his ear again. "Hello?"

"Adrian! It's Julian!" His Chief Financial Officer was breathing heavily, panic distorting his tone. "The servers are wiping! The automated clearing houses just reversed all forty-two pending acquisitions! The SEC just filed an emergency freeze on our private equity funds! We're showing a zero balance across all domestic accounts!"

"Re-route the capital through our Grand Cayman offshore holdings!" Adrian screamed, his composure completely shattering as he began pacing across the blood-marked marble. "Do it now! Use the secondary access codes!"

"I tried!" Julian wept openly over the line. "The Cayman accounts don't exist anymore, Adrian! The institutional authority wiped the registration off the registry ten minutes ago! Our legal counsel just resigned via broadcast email! The entire board of directors has submitted immediate resignations! It's over! The company is gone!"

CLICK.

"No... no, no, no," Adrian muttered, staring wildly at his reflection in the glass window. "This isn't happening. This is a cyber attack. It's a glitch."

BUZZ.

He answered the next call automatically, his voice a hoarse whisper. "Who is this?"

"Mr. Carter," a stern, cold voice declared over the speakerphone. "This is Assistant Director Miller of the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. We are currently executing a federal seizure warrant on all real property, corporate assets, and personal holdings registered under your name and Carter-Vane Capital."

Adrian gasped, his knees buckling slightly. "A seizure warrant?! On what grounds?!"

"Tax evasion, wire fraud, racketeering, and sovereign asset violation," the agent replied without a trace of emotion. "Federal marshals are currently en route to your Greenwich residence to secure the premises. You have fifteen minutes to vacate the property before you are removed by law enforcement officers."

The line went dead.

Vanessa backed away from Adrian, her eyes wide with mounting terror. She looked at the champagne silk dress she was wearing, then at the sprawling mansion, then at the man who was suddenly shaking uncontrollably in his hundred-dollar Italian leather shoes.

"Adrian..." Vanessa stammered, her voice high and panicked. "What is happening?! What about the company?! What about my allowance?! What about the house in the Hamptons?!"

Adrian didn't answer her. He couldn't. His mind was trying to process an impossible reality. In less than three minutes, his net worth had plummeted from hundreds of millions of dollars to absolute, irrecoverable zero. His reputation, his authority, his corporate empire—everything he had spent twelve years building had evaporated into thin air like a mist under a scorching sun.

Slowly, painfully, I pushed myself up from the floor.

I ignored the sharp spikes of agony radiating from my back. I adjusted the strap of my ruined evening gown, smoothed my dark hair over my shoulder, and stood tall beneath the crystal chandelier.

Adrian turned his head toward me, his eyes hollow, dark, and filled with a wild, desperate confusion.

"Who..." Adrian choked out, his voice cracking as he looked at me as if seeing me for the first time in his life. "Who is your father, Emily?"
