Chapter 4 - The True Identity

I took one slow, deliberate step toward him. My heels clicked crisply against the marble, echoing through the quiet foyer.
"You always loved telling people I came from nothing, Adrian," I said softly, my voice smooth, cold, and entirely unbothered by the bleeding on my back. "You told your investors my father was a retired history teacher named Arthur Miller from a small town in Ohio."
Adrian swallowed hard, his chest heaving as he tried to breathe. "Isn't he?!"
I offered a small, sad smile. "My father's name is Arthur. But he didn't teach high school history, Adrian. He wrote it."
Vanessa gasped, stepping further away from Adrian toward the main door.
"My father is Arthur Vance," I said, watching the names register in his mind. "Chairman Emeritus of Vance International Holdings. Sovereign Advisor to the Bank of International Settlements. The man who personally restructured the debt of three European nations in the nineties, and the single largest private shareholder of the banking clearinghouses that process every dollar moving through Wall Street."
Adrian’s jaw dropped. His eyes expanded until the whites were completely visible around his pupils.
"Vance..." he whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely pronounce the syllables. "Arthur Vance... the Sovereign Titan... the man who built the global clearing system..."
"When I met you four years ago," I continued, taking another step closer until I was standing inches from his trembling frame, "I was tired of men who wanted my father's money, my family's influence, and my name. I wanted to see if I could build a quiet, normal life with a man who loved me simply for who I was."
I reached out and touched his lapel, brushing a speck of dust from his jacket.
"My father warned me about you," I whispered. "He looked at your financial records three years ago and told me you were a narcissistic, small-minded opportunist who used people like stepladders. He wanted to destroy your firm before our wedding."
Tears of pure terror began pouring down Adrian's cheeks. "Emily... please..."
"I begged him not to," I continued, my voice dipping into a chilling register. "I told him you were good. I told him you just needed time to mature. I protected you from my father for three years, Adrian. Every regulatory clearance you received? My father’s trustees signed off on them to make me happy. Every major investor who walked into your office? They walked in because my family’s banking syndicate quietly guaranteed their risk."
Adrian fell to his knees directly into the puddle of my blood on the marble floor. He reached out with trembling, blood-stained hands, trying to grab the hem of my gown.
"Emily! I’m sorry! I was foolish! Vanessa tricked me! She seduced me! I didn't know what I was doing!" he sobbed hysterically, wiping tears and sweat from his face. "Please! Call him back! Tell him it was a mistake! I love you! You're my wife!"

I looked down at him with absolute, unyielding indifference.
"You didn't just strike me tonight, Adrian," I said, pointing to the riding crop lying discarded near his knee. "You struck Arthur Vance’s daughter. And you did it in front of the woman you replaced me with."
