Chapter 5 - The Eviction

Before Adrian could utter another word of desperate begging, heavy, authoritative knocks rattled the thick oak front doors of the estate.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
"Federal Marshals! Open the door!"
Vanessa let out a terrified shriek, completely abandoning Adrian as she rushed to unlock the heavy brass deadbolts. She pulled the door open, practically throwing herself out onto the covered portico.
Six armed Federal Marshals, flanked by four state troopers and two representatives from the United States Treasury Department, stepped into the grand foyer. Leading them was a sharp-faced woman in a dark charcoal suit carrying a leather briefing document.
"Adrian Carter?" the lead official asked, scanning the room before her eyes landed on the man kneeling in blood on the floor.
"Yes... yes, I'm Adrian Carter," he wept, looking up at her with red, frantic eyes. "Please, there's been a mistake, my wife—"
"You are being formally served with an emergency eviction and asset seizure order," the official cut him off flatly, handing him a thick stack of legal papers. "This property, along with all vehicles in the driveway, all furnishings, art pieces, and personal accounts, has been placed under direct federal receivership."
"My clothes!" Vanessa shrieked from the hallway. "What about my jewelry?! My bags?!"
"Nothing leaves this house, ma'am," a Marshal stated firmly, stepping into her path. "All items purchased using funds derived from Carter-Vane accounts are considered subject to federal forfeiture. Hand over your purse and step outside."
"What?!" Vanessa screamed, her hands clutching her designer handbag tightly to her chest. "I’m pregnant! You can't do this to me! Adrian, tell them!"
Two female officers stepped forward, calmly but firmly removing the handbag from Vanessa’s arms and guiding her toward the rainy driveway. Her champagne silk dress was soaked within seconds as she stood crying on the wet asphalt, realizing her dream of luxury had turned into an immediate, public disaster.
The lead Treasury official turned her gaze toward me. Her eyes widened slightly as she noticed the blood staining my gown and the severe lashes across my shoulders.
"Mrs. Carter?" she asked, her voice instantly softening into a tone of deep respect. "Your father's private security team is waiting at the end of the driveway. A medical transport unit has been cleared to escort you directly to his private estate in Greenwich."
"Thank you," I said smoothly.
"Emily! No!" Adrian screamed, crawling across the floor toward me as the Marshals pulled him back by his shoulders. "Don't leave me! Emily! Tell your father I'll fix this! I'll do whatever he wants! I'll be a good husband! Please!"
I stopped near the doorway, turning my head to look back at him one last time.

He was pinned to the floor, handcuffed, his face smeared with tears, sweat, and my blood. The brilliant, unstoppable CEO of Carter-Vane Capital was gone, replaced by a broken, pathetic fraud whose entire existence had been erased in less than five minutes.
"Goodbye, Adrian," I said softly. "My father will handle the divorce papers tomorrow morning."
