Chapter 10 - The New Horizon

Three years later.
The autumn air in the Sierra Nevada foothills was crisp, sweet, and smelled of fallen oak leaves and clean mountain pine.
On a scenic ten-acre property overlooking the Sacramento Valley sat a beautiful, two-story craftsman house built of natural stone and cedar wood. Surrounding the house were manicured fruit orchards, a large garden, and a sprawling playground set.
A large, wooden sign hung near the front gate:
PRESTON FORENSIC FINANCIAL CONSULTING
Inside the bright, sunlit home office, Claire sat at a large oak desk covered with financial ledgers, digital monitors, and certified state audit reports. Following her retirement from full-time field service, she had founded her own private forensic agency, specializing in protecting small non-profits and public charities from executive embezzlement.
The door to the office pushed open, and four-year-old Leo came running inside, carrying a large drawing pad covered in bright green crayon scribbles.
"Mommy! Look!" Leo giggled, holding the pad up to her desk. "I drew a truck!"
Claire laughed warmly, sweeping her son up into her lap and kissing his cheek. "That is the most magnificent green truck I have ever seen, Leo."
She looked at the small framed photograph sitting on her desk.
It was a photo taken on the day she bought this house—just her and Leo standing in front of the open front door under the bright blue sky, holding the shiny new brass keys in their hands.
There were no crystal chandeliers in this house. There were no eighty-five-thousand-dollar dresses, no servants, and no pretenses of grand social nobility.
There was only peace, honesty, and an unshakable foundation built on truth.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. She looked at the caller ID: California Attorney General’s Office.

Claire picked up the phone, holding Leo close against her side as he continued to draw his green trucks on her notepad.
"This is Claire Preston," she said, her voice filled with quiet confidence, warm authority, and complete freedom. "How can I help you today?"
