Chapter 8 - The Hammer Falls
Two weeks later, the jury returned after less than three hours of deliberation.
"In the matter of United States v. Victoria Bellacourt, on count one, federal wire fraud: Guilty. On count two, money laundering conspiracy: Guilty. On count three, felony child endangerment: Guilty."
The court clerk continued reading the verdict form for forty minutes.
Guilty on all forty-eight counts against Victoria Bellacourt. Guilty on thirty-six counts against Richard Bellacourt.
Three weeks later, the sentencing judge—a veteran jurist known for her zero-tolerance policy regarding corporate corruption—delivered her final judgment.
"Victoria Bellacourt," the judge declared from the bench, her voice stern and unyielding. "You operated a massive criminal scheme with absolute contempt for the law, and when confronted with a medical emergency involving your unborn grandchild, you chose to prioritize social appearances over human life."
The judge leaned forward.
"I sentence you to twenty-eight years in federal custody without the possibility of parole. Richard Bellacourt, for your leading role in the financial enterprise, I sentence you to twenty-two years."
As the federal marshals stepped forward to attach leg irons to Victoria and Richard, dragging them toward the holding elevators, Evan Bellacourt was led into the room in an orange jumpsuit to hear his own plea bargain sentence.
For his testimony against his parents and his complete surrender of all trust assets, Evan received eight years in medium-security federal prison, followed by ten years of supervised release and a mandatory twenty-million-dollar restitution order.
As Evan was being led away, his eyes met Claire’s one last time across the courtroom aisle.
