Chapter 5 - The ICU and the Audit

At 11:40 PM, inside the high-risk delivery suite at St. Helena Trauma Center, a high-pitched, fragile cry broke through the sterile air of the operating room.
"Time of birth: 11:42 PM," the lead obstetrician announced, gently holding up a pale, tiny baby boy. "Weight: four pounds, eight ounces. He's breathing on his own, Claire! A strong little boy!"
Claire lay on the delivery bed, exhausted, covered in cold sweat, tears streaming down her cheeks as the nurses placed her newborn son against her chest for a brief, magical second.
"He's beautiful, Claire," Agent Voss murmured from the corner of the delivery room, where she had remained on state security detail throughout the labor.
"His name is Leo," Claire whispered, touching her baby’s tiny, translucent fingers. "Leo Preston."
She had deliberately excluded the name Bellacourt from his birth certificate.
Twenty minutes later, after baby Leo was placed in a specialized neonatal warming incubator under the care of top pediatric specialists, Claire was moved to a private recovery room on the secured fifth floor.
Sitting beside her bed was Agent Voss, along with two senior assistant state attorney generals who had flown in by state transport from Sacramento. On the bedside table sat Claire’s leather briefcase, unlocked and open.
"The raid was an absolute success, Claire," Assistant Attorney General Marcus Cole declared, reviewing the digital files displayed on a encrypted tablet. "Based on the internal server data seized during the wedding raid, we’ve frozen sixty-four million dollars in Bellacourt family assets across eight financial institutions."
"What about the physical estate?" Claire asked, her voice quiet but clear.
"The vineyard, the main manor, the fleet vehicles, and the commercial processing facilities have been placed under federal receivership," Cole replied. "They will be liquidated at public auction to satisfy back taxes, state fines, and worker compensation claims for the migrant workers they defrauded."
"And the family?"
Voss pulled out a legal briefing sheet.
"Victoria Bellacourt is being held without bail at the Napa County Detention Center on charges of felony child endangerment, medical obstruction, and federal conspiracy," Voss stated. "Richard Bellacourt’s legal team tried to post his five-million-dollar bail, but the judge deemed him a flight risk after we discovered a private jet waiting at Santa Rosa airport."
Voss paused, looking gently at Claire. "And Evan... Evan has spent the last three hours in an interrogation room in San Francisco. He’s offering to testify against his mother and father in exchange for a plea deal."
Claire closed her eyes, letting out a long, slow breath.
"Does he know about Leo?" Claire asked softly.
"He asked to see you," Voss said. "His attorney filed an emergency petition for visitation rights."

Claire opened her eyes, her gaze turning cold and hard.
"Tell his attorney," Claire said, "that Evan can speak to my divorce lawyer."
