Chapter 6 - The Interrogation

Two days later, in a sterile, windowless visitor room at the Napa County Correctional Facility, Evan Bellacourt sat at a metal table wearing an orange jumpsuit. His hair was greasy, his face pale and unshaven, his hands trembling as he stared at the woman sitting across from him.

Claire sat calmly on her side of the glass partition, wearing a simple gray sweater, her hair pulled back in a neat clip.

Beside her sat Arthur Vance—the formidable head of her private legal team, whom she had hired using her independent maternal inheritance funds.

"Claire... thank God you came," Evan wept, his voice raspy as he reached toward the glass partition. "How is the baby? Is he okay? What did you name him?"

"His name is Leo Preston," Claire replied, her voice completely flat, lacking any trace of heat or affection. "He is doing remarkably well. He gains an ounce of weight every day."

Evan winced as if struck. "Preston? Claire... he’s a Bellacourt! He’s my son!"

"He is my son, Evan," Claire corrected sharply. "He is the son of a woman you locked in a room while she was in premature labor so your sister could finish her dance."

"I didn't want to lock you in, Claire!" Evan stammered, pulling at his collar. "It was my mother! She panicked! You know how she is—she commands the family! I was just trying to keep the peace until the photographers left!"

"You didn't keep the peace, Evan. You made a choice," Claire said, leaning forward until her face was inches from the glass. "You chose your family’s stolen millions over your wife and child. You chose your social status over my life."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal documents onto the counter in front of the partition.

"Mr. Bellacourt," Vance said smoothly. "My client has filed for an immediate, absolute divorce on the grounds of felony conviction, marital fraud, and extreme cruelty. Furthermore, we have filed a petition for sole legal and physical custody of Leo Preston, with zero visitation rights granted to you or any member of the Bellacourt family."

Evan stared at the documents in utter shock. "Sole custody? You can't do this! I am his father!"

"You are currently facing twenty-five years in federal prison for wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny, Mr. Bellacourt," Vance noted dryly. "The court has already designated you an unfit parent."

Evan turned his wild, desperate eyes back to Claire. "Claire... please! I love you! I can help you! I can give the prosecutors everything they need on my mother and father! Just tell them to let me out on house arrest so I can be with you and Leo!"

Claire stood up from her chair, picking up her coat.

"I don't need your help, Evan," Claire said quietly. "I already gave the prosecutors everything they needed nine months ago. You aren't bargaining with them... you're just waiting for your sentence."

She turned her back on him and walked toward the heavy steel exit door.

"Claire! Don't leave me!" Evan screamed, slamming his handcuffed wrists against the partition wall as the guards grabbed him. "Claire! Please!"

Claire stepped through the door into the bright, warm hallway without looking back once.
