Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guests

In the main ballroom, the ten-piece band abruptly stopped playing mid-measure.

The sudden silence was immediately replaced by the high-pitched, warbling wail of dozens of emergency sirens echoing up the winding vineyard driveway. High-powered searchlights cut through the glass walls of the conservatory, flashing blinding rays of red, blue, and white light across the three hundred tuxedo- and gown-clad guests.

"What on earth is that?" Victoria muttered, her face turning pale as she stepped out of the bathroom into the service hallway. "Is that... a fire drill?"

Evan rushed toward the end of the corridor, looking through the double doors that led into the catering kitchen.

"Mother..." Evan gasped, his voice cracking with sudden terror. "Mother, look outside."

Parked on the manicured turf of the main lawn—directly over the elaborate twenty-thousand-dollar floral arrangement set up for the wedding ceremony— sat two black state tactical armored vehicles. Four county advanced-life-support ambulances pulled up directly onto the white marble terrace, their tires leaving heavy black skid marks across the pristine stone.

Before the estate security detail could react, thirty heavily armed officers wearing tactical vests emblazoned with STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL and FBI poured through the grand entrance doors, securing every exit.

Leading the main unit was Special Agent Mara Voss—a tall, stern woman with graying hair, wearing a dark blue windbreaker and carrying an emergency medical coordinator behind her.

The wedding guests erupted into chaotic screams and panicked murmuring.

Celeste Bellacourt rushed forward, holding up her massive lace train, her face contorted in rage. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a private event! My father owns this estate! Who gave you permission to land helicopters on our lawn?!"

Agent Voss ignored Celeste completely. She raised a bullhorn to her lips, her voice cutting through the panic with absolute, terrifying authority.

"Attention all attendees! This property is currently the subject of a joint state and federal search-and-seizure warrant issued by the Superior Court of California! Remain where you are! Do not attempt to access personal vehicles or erase digital devices!"

Voss turned to the chief paramedic standing beside her. "Team two, follow me to the east service corridor. We have a medical emergency in progress."

Inside the service hallway, Victoria tried to lock the oak door once more, her hands trembling violently. "Evan! Help me bar this door! They can't come back here!"

"Mother, what are you doing?!" Evan panicked, grabbing her arm. "That’s the police!"

Before Victoria could answer, the oak door was kicked open with brutal force.

Two tactical officers flooded the hallway, sidearms drawn, followed closely by three paramedics carrying a portable gurney and emergency trauma kits.

Agent Voss stepped into the room, her sharp eyes sweeping over the scene: Evan cowering near the sink, Victoria standing over Claire with a look of pure venom, and Claire kneeling on the floor in a pool of water, holding her leather briefcase in one hand and her belly in the other.

"Claire!" Voss shouted, dropping to one knee beside her. "Paramedics, get in here now!"

The paramedics moved with practiced speed, placing an oxygen mask over Claire’s face, taking her vital signs, and gently lifting her onto the gurney.

"Fetal heart rate is elevated, thirty-four weeks gestation, active labor!" the paramedic lead called out. "We need to transport to St. Helena Trauma Center immediately!"

As they rolled the gurney out into the hallway, Victoria stepped directly into Agent Voss’s path, her voice rising into an aristocratic shriek.

"You have no right to barge in here!" Victoria roared. "My husband is Richard Bellacourt! He is on the board of trustees for the state university! I will have your job by morning, you pathetic little bureaucrat!"

Agent Voss reached into her windbreaker pocket, pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder containing a fifty-page document, and slapped it hard against Victoria’s silk-draped chest.

"Victoria Bellacourt," Voss said, her voice flat, cold, and utterly unimpressed. "You are being placed under immediate arrest for obstruction of emergency medical personnel, unlawful imprisonment, and felony child endangerment."

Voss nodded to the tactical officers behind her. "Handcuff her."
