Part 3: The 911 Call Made Before the Crash

The traffic camera photograph sat on the table between us.
I couldn't stop staring at it.
My twins were laughing in the back seat of the SUV.
Claire's hands rested calmly on the steering wheel.
They had no idea they were being followed.
No idea the man driving behind them—their own father—already knew they would never make it home.
Detective Harris slid another folder toward me.
"We've subpoenaed the phone records."
I looked up.
"For Adrian?"
"And Melissa."
Rebecca frowned.
"Did you find anything?"
The detective didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he handed me a printed timeline.
Every phone call.
Every text message.
Every GPS location.
Minute by minute.
At 3:41 p.m., Adrian's phone connected to a cell tower less than half a mile behind the twins' SUV.
At 3:44, Melissa sent him a text.
They're still ahead of us.
Three minutes later...
Another message.
Don't get too close.
My stomach twisted.
They weren't grieving parents.
They were coordinating.
Then I saw something impossible.
At 3:52 p.m.
Nine-one-one.
Outgoing call.
Duration:
Forty-three seconds.
I looked at Detective Harris.
"The crash happened at 3:56."
He nodded.
"Exactly."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"They called emergency services..."
"...before the collision?"
"Yes."
"Play it."
I whispered.
Detective Harris connected his laptop to a speaker.
The dispatcher answered calmly.
"911. What's your emergency?"
A woman's voice replied.
Melissa.
Breathing hard.
Pretending to panic.
"There's a silver SUV driving all over the road."
The dispatcher asked,
"Where are you now?"
Melissa answered immediately.
She gave the exact highway.
The exact direction.
The exact mile marker.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"I think they're about to lose control."
The dispatcher asked,
"Has there been an accident?"
Melissa replied,
"Not yet..."
Then corrected herself.
"...I mean... I think there will be."
The recording stopped.
No one spoke.
Rebecca slowly removed her glasses.
"She predicted it."
Detective Harris nodded.
"Four minutes before it happened."
The dispatcher had documented the call.
At the time, no one thought anything of it.
People often reported reckless drivers.
But now...
Combined with the sabotaged brakes...
The insurance changes...
The forged signatures...
And the traffic footage...
The call became something else entirely.
Evidence of prior knowledge.
My hands trembled.
"They knew exactly when it would happen."
Detective Harris quietly replied,
"We believe so."
The investigation accelerated overnight.
Search warrants were executed on Adrian's office.
Melissa's apartment.
Their shared storage unit.
Financial records.
Electronic devices.
Everything was seized.
Most of it revealed nothing.
Until forensic analysts unlocked Melissa's deleted messages.
Hundreds had been erased.
Almost all were recovered.
One conversation, dated eight days before the crash, immediately caught investigators' attention.
Melissa: Are you sure this will work?
Adrian: It has to.
Melissa: What about Claire?
There was a two-hour gap.
Then Adrian answered.
Wrong place. Wrong time.
I felt my throat close.
Claire.
He knew.
He knew the babysitter would die too.
And he didn't care.
Rebecca looked horrified.
"He planned for collateral damage."
Detective Harris nodded grimly.
"That's what it looks like."
Another message appeared.
Melissa: Your wife will never recover from this.
Adrian: Exactly.
Melissa: Then everything becomes ours.
The room fell silent.
Everything.
Not just insurance money.
My inheritance.
The house.
Our investment accounts.
The businesses my father had left me.
He hadn't simply wanted our children dead.
He wanted me destroyed.
Too broken to fight back.
Too traumatized to notice what he was stealing.
Detective Harris closed the folder.
"We're building a very strong case."
I nodded slowly.
"But there's still something missing."
He looked at me.
"What?"
"The motive isn't enough."
"The money isn't enough."
"We still have to prove who actually ordered the brakes to be cut."
"We need someone who heard Adrian say it."
The detective sighed.
"We're looking."
Three days later...
He called again.
His voice sounded different.
Excited.
"Mrs. Mercer..."
"I think we've found your witness."
My heart skipped.
"Who?"
"The mechanic wasn't alone that day."
I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.
"What do you mean?"
"There was another employee in the garage."
"He wasn't listed on the invoices."
"He quit the day after the repairs."
"And disappeared."
I could barely breathe.
"Did you find him?"
Detective Harris answered quietly.
"Yes."
"He called us himself."
"After seeing Adrian arrested at the funeral."
The witness had spent weeks living in fear.
But after watching handcuffs close around Adrian's wrists...
He finally decided to tell the truth.
And according to his statement...
The person who gave the order to kill my children...
May you like
Wasn't Adrian.
It was someone else entirely.
