Part 9: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

No one moved.

The name hung in the air like a sentence.

Rebecca.

My attorney.

My friend.

The person who had stood beside me when I thought I had lost everything.

The woman who helped me uncover Adrian's lies.

The woman who held my hand outside the courtroom.

And now...

Her name was inside a recording connected to a missing woman's final moments.

Rebecca was the first to speak.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"No, that isn't possible."

Detective Harris didn't accuse her.

He didn't need to.

The evidence had already changed the atmosphere.

Everyone was looking at her differently.

Including me.

Rebecca turned toward me.

"You know me."

"I would never..."

Her voice faded.

Because she saw the doubt in my eyes.

Not because I believed she killed Samantha.

But because I had learned something painful.

In this case...

Everyone had a hidden side.

Detective Harris carefully picked up the audio file.

"We need to verify this."

He looked at Rebecca.

"You understand."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Then she whispered,

"I want to help you find the truth."

The forensic team examined the recording.

The results came back hours later.

The audio was authentic.

No edits.

No manipulation.

The voice calling Rebecca's name had not been added.

It was part of the original recording.

But there was something else.

The timestamp.

The recording was made inside Samantha Reed's apartment.

And the location data from the file showed something unexpected.

The device had been connected to a private Wi-Fi network.

A network registered nine years ago.

To...

Rebecca Stone.

I felt my heart sink.

"Rebecca..."

She closed her eyes.

"I can explain."

The room went silent.

Detective Harris looked at her.

"Please do."

Rebecca sat down.

For the first time since I met her...

She looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

"Nine years ago..."

She began.

"I wasn't working as an attorney yet."

"I was an investigator for a financial crimes firm."

I frowned.

"You never told me that."

"Because it was connected to Adrian."

My breathing stopped.

"What?"

Rebecca looked at the table.

"I was investigating him."

She explained.

Nine years earlier, Adrian's company had been suspected of laundering money.

Rebecca was hired to gather evidence.

Samantha Reed was her inside source.

"She contacted me because she didn't trust anyone else."

Rebecca said.

"She had discovered the accounts."

"The fake companies."

"The hidden transfers."

She looked at Detective Harris.

"She was going to expose him."

"Then why is your name in the recording?"

Detective Harris asked.

Rebecca swallowed.

"Because I was there."

Everyone froze.

She continued quickly.

"Not because I helped him."

"Because I arrived after Samantha called me."

She explained.

The night Samantha disappeared, Rebecca rushed to her apartment.

When she arrived...

Adrian was already there.

Samantha was terrified.

Rebecca confronted him.

Told him she would call police.

Then Adrian received a call.

From someone else.

Someone telling him to leave.

"Who?"

Detective Harris asked.

Rebecca looked at me.

"I don't know."

"That's the truth."

"I only heard a woman's voice through his phone."

The recording continued after the part we heard.

The forensic team recovered more seconds hidden beneath damaged audio.

Samantha's voice:

"Rebecca..."

"Don't trust him."

Then Adrian:

"It's too late."

Then a woman's voice from the phone:

"Bring her to the car."

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Rebecca looked devastated.

"I tried to stop him."

"I followed them."

"But I lost them."

"By the time I reached the street..."

"They were gone."

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"Because I was scared."

"Scared?"

She nodded.

"Adrian knew my family."

"He knew where I lived."

"He sent me photos of my parents' house."

A chill went through me.

"He threatened you."

"Yes."

"And I made the worst mistake of my life."

"What mistake?"

Detective Harris asked.

Rebecca answered quietly.

"I stayed silent."

The room became still.

She continued.

"I spent nine years trying to gather enough evidence to destroy him."

"I thought I needed to build the perfect case."

"But while I was waiting..."

"He kept hurting people."

Rebecca looked at me.

"I saw your name on the insurance paperwork."

"I recognized Adrian's pattern."

"That's why I contacted you."

"I wasn't pretending to help."

"I was trying to finally stop him."

Detective Harris considered her words.

Then asked:

"Who was the woman on the phone?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"I don't know."

"But Samantha did."

"Before she disappeared, she told me one thing."

"What?"

Rebecca looked at me.

Her voice dropped.

"She said Adrian wasn't the mastermind."

The room went cold.

"Then who was?"

Rebecca opened her bag.

She removed a small envelope.

"I found this in Samantha's old files."

"I kept it because I didn't understand it."

"Until now."

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

Three people standing together.

Adrian.

Andrew.

And a woman.

But this time...

The woman wasn't Lauren.

Wasn't Evelyn.

Wasn't Melissa.

I recognized her immediately.

Because I had seen her face every day.

She was in our family photos.

At birthdays.

At holidays.

Holding Ava and Ethan as babies.

The woman who had always said she loved my children.

The woman who cried the loudest at their funeral.

My own sister.

Caroline.

Rebecca whispered,

"She was the person Samantha was afraid of."

Detective Harris stared at the photo.

"And Caroline knew Adrian's entire plan."

I couldn't speak.

My sister.

The person who shared my childhood.

The person who promised to protect my children.

Had been connected to the nightmare from the beginning.

Then Detective Harris received an urgent call.

His face changed.

"What happened?"

He listened for several seconds.

Then looked at me.

"We need to leave."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because Caroline Mercer is gone."

"Her house is empty."

"And she left a message."

My heart stopped.

"What message?"

The detective answered quietly.

She wrote only one sentence:

"If you want the truth about the twins, come alone."

May you like

And the address she left...

Was the abandoned road where Ava and Ethan's car crashed.
