Part 5: My Best Friend's Betrayal

I stared at Detective Harris in disbelief.

"My... friend?"

He nodded slowly.

"Miles Granger insists there was a third person involved."

"Someone who wasn't at the garage very often."

"But according to him..."

"...she financed the operation."

Rebecca frowned.

"Did he give a name?"

The detective hesitated.

"He did."

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then he quietly said,

"Lauren Whitmore."

The world seemed to stop.

"No."

The word escaped my lips before I even realized I had spoken.

"It can't be."

Rebecca looked at me.

"You know her?"

I laughed bitterly.

"Know her?"

"Lauren was my maid of honor."

"We met during our freshman year of college."

She had stood beside me at my wedding.

Held my hand through both pregnancies.

Visited the hospital the day Ava and Ethan were born with balloons almost taller than she was.

When my children learned to walk...

Lauren had been there.

When they celebrated their fifth birthday...

She baked the cake.

She wasn't just my best friend.

She was family.

"There has to be a mistake."

I whispered.

Detective Harris slid another folder across the table.

"I hoped there was."

Inside were bank records.

Dozens of wire transfers.

Not to Adrian.

Not directly.

To Melissa.

Small amounts.

Five thousand.

Ten thousand.

Fifteen thousand dollars.

Over six months...

Nearly $380,000.

"What is this?"

Rebecca asked.

"Melissa never earned enough to explain those deposits."

The detective nodded.

"We traced every transfer."

"They all originated from shell companies."

I already knew what that meant.

Someone was laundering money.

"Who owns the companies?"

I asked.

Detective Harris looked directly into my eyes.

"Lauren Whitmore."

I felt physically ill.

"No..."

Rebecca reached for my hand.

I barely noticed.

Images flooded my mind.

Lauren insisting we use her financial advisor.

Lauren encouraging me to take longer vacations.

Lauren recommending Melissa for a temporary marketing position at Adrian's company.

At the time...

Everything had seemed thoughtful.

Helpful.

Now...

Each memory felt poisonous.

"I want to interview her."

I said.

Detective Harris shook his head.

"You won't have to."

"Why?"

"Because she's already here."

Two officers escorted Lauren into the interrogation room.

She looked elegant as always.

Tailored cream-colored suit.

Perfect makeup.

Diamond earrings.

If someone had told me she was on her way to a charity luncheon...

I would have believed them.

She smiled when she saw me.

A sad smile.

"I'm sorry you had to find out like this."

I stared at her.

"Find out what?"

She didn't answer.

Detective Harris activated the recorder.

"Ms. Whitmore..."

"Did you transfer money to Melissa Cole?"

"Yes."

Lauren answered without hesitation.

Rebecca blinked in surprise.

"You admit it?"

"Of course."

"There are bank records."

"No point lying."

"Why?"

I asked.

My voice barely sounded like my own.

Lauren finally looked at me.

"Because Adrian promised we'd all benefit."

I couldn't breathe.

"'We?'"

She nodded.

"You."

"Me."

"Him."

I laughed in disbelief.

"You expected me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expected you to die."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Rebecca slowly stood.

"What did you just say?"

Lauren repeated it calmly.

"The original plan wasn't to kill the children."

"It was supposed to be Olivia."

I frowned.

"Who?"

"Our financial consultant."

Then she sighed.

"Adrian changed the plan."

"When?"

"After discovering the insurance policies."

The detective leaned forward.

"Explain."

Lauren folded her hands neatly on the table.

"I introduced Adrian to several investors."

"He accumulated enormous gambling debts."

"Over three million dollars."

Rebecca looked shocked.

"He hid them."

Lauren nodded.

"He forged documents."

"Moved company funds."

"Borrowed from dangerous people."

"When repayment became impossible..."

"He panicked."

"And then?"

I asked.

"He realized the twins were insured."

I closed my eyes.

"No..."

"He increased the policies."

"Forged your signature."

"And convinced Melissa the children would never actually be inside the vehicle."

The room went still.

Detective Harris frowned.

"You're saying Melissa believed the SUV would be empty?"

Lauren nodded.

"That's what Adrian told her."

"But the morning of the crash..."

"He changed the schedule."

"Without telling anyone."

Rebecca stared at her.

"So Claire..."

"...and the twins..."

"Weren't supposed to be there?"

Lauren slowly shook her head.

"No."

"They were never part of my understanding."

I wanted to believe her.

More than anything.

But Detective Harris spoke before I could.

"That's not what the messages show."

Lauren looked confused.

"What messages?"

The detective placed printed screenshots in front of her.

Melissa's texts.

What about Claire?

Wrong place. Wrong time.

Lauren's face lost its color.

"She knew."

The detective nodded.

"Both of them knew."

Lauren buried her face in her hands.

For the first time...

She cried.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just quiet tears.

"I should've gone to the police."

"Instead..."

"I convinced myself it would all fall apart before anyone got hurt."

Rebecca answered coldly.

"It didn't."

As officers escorted Lauren away, she suddenly turned back toward me.

"There was something Adrian never wanted anyone to know."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered only four words.

"He wasn't driving."

Every person in the room froze.

Detective Harris narrowed his eyes.

"What do you mean?"

Lauren looked directly at him.

"The man in the traffic camera..."

"...wasn't Adrian."

The detective stared at her.

"Then who was it?"

Lauren answered with trembling lips.

"His identical twin brother."

A brother Adrian had claimed died in a military training accident twenty years earlier.

A brother...

Who, according to every official record...

Didn't exist anymore.

And if Lauren was telling the truth...

May you like

Then the man everyone believed they had arrested...

Might not have been the one who followed my children to their deaths.
