Part 8: The Victim Nobody Remembered

The room remained frozen after Melissa's voice echoed through the speakers.

"I didn't kill the children."

"Adrian did."

"And he killed someone else before them."

Detective Harris replayed the recording.

Once.

Twice.

A third time.

Every word was clear.

Melissa wasn't confessing.

She was trying to save herself.

But she had just opened a door to a crime far older than the one we were investigating.

"Find the date of this recording."

Detective Harris ordered.

The forensic technician checked the file information.

His expression changed.

"Nine years ago."

Rebecca looked at me.

"Nine years?"

I couldn't understand.

Nine years before Ava and Ethan died...

Adrian was already hiding something.

The recording continued.

Melissa's voice was shaking.

"You said nobody would find out."

A man's voice answered.

Adrian.

"Nobody found out because I handled it."

Melissa cried.

"You said she would disappear."

A long pause.

Then Adrian replied:

"And she did."

The recording ended.

Detective Harris immediately searched Adrian's records.

Past addresses.

Old business connections.

Former employees.

Friends.

Anyone connected to him nine years earlier.

For hours...

Nothing.

Then one name appeared.

A woman.

Age 29.

Missing.

No body found.

No suspects.

Case closed after three years due to lack of evidence.

Her name:

Samantha Reed.

I looked at the photograph attached to the file.

A young woman with bright eyes.

A normal smile.

A life interrupted.

"Who was she?"

Detective Harris answered quietly.

"Adrian's former financial assistant."

My blood turned cold.

Another financial person.

Another woman who knew where money moved.

The investigation into Samantha's disappearance had been simple on paper.

She vanished after leaving work one evening.

Her car was found abandoned.

Her apartment was empty.

No signs of struggle.

No witnesses.

The case eventually went cold.

But one detail stood out.

The week before she disappeared...

Samantha reported concerns about company finances.

She believed someone was moving money illegally.

Rebecca looked at me.

"She found something."

I nodded.

"Like I did."

Detective Harris agreed.

"And she got too close."

Investigators reopened Samantha Reed's case.

They searched old evidence.

Old reports.

Old phone records.

Then they found something nobody had noticed.

A forgotten voicemail.

Recorded the night Samantha disappeared.

It had been marked as "irrelevant."

Now...

It was everything.

The voicemail played.

Samantha's frightened voice filled the room.

"I know what you're doing, Adrian."

"I copied the files."

"I know about the accounts."

A pause.

Then...

"If anything happens to me, the police need to know."

The recording ended abruptly.

Everyone looked at Detective Harris.

"She knew."

He nodded.

"She had evidence."

"But where did it go?"

The next clue came from the old police report.

A detective had written:

Possible evidence stolen from victim's apartment.

The evidence:

A laptop.

A USB drive.

A handwritten notebook.

All missing.

Rebecca stared at the page.

"Someone cleaned the apartment."

Detective Harris nodded.

"Someone who knew exactly what to remove."

That evening, investigators searched Adrian's oldest storage records.

Most were empty.

But one warehouse unit remained.

Registered under a company that no longer existed.

The same pattern.

A dead company.

A hidden location.

A forgotten secret.

The police entered the warehouse just before midnight.

Inside...

Dust covered everything.

Old furniture.

Broken equipment.

Boxes of forgotten documents.

Nothing obvious.

Until one officer found a hidden compartment behind a false wall.

Inside:

A laptop.

A USB drive.

And a small notebook.

My hands shook when Detective Harris showed me the recovered notebook.

The handwriting was unmistakably feminine.

Samantha's.

The first page contained one sentence:

"If you found this, I'm probably dead."

I couldn't breathe.

The notebook documented everything.

Adrian's financial crimes.

Andrew's involvement.

Evelyn's role.

Melissa's connection.

And one final entry dated two days before Samantha vanished.

"Adrian knows I know."

"He offered me money to stay quiet."

"I refused."

The next line was unfinished.

The ink was darker.

Like she had written it in a hurry.

"If he comes after me, the person helping him is..."

The sentence stopped.

Everyone stared at the blank space.

The name had never been completed.

Detective Harris turned to the USB drive.

"Maybe she recorded more."

The drive contained hundreds of files.

Most were financial documents.

But one audio file was labeled:

FINAL_BACKUP

We opened it.

Static.

Breathing.

Then Samantha's voice.

Whispering.

Terrified.

"He's here."

A man's voice in the background.

A voice we all recognized.

Adrian.

"Samantha, don't make this difficult."

Then another voice.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"She won't tell anyone."

The room went silent.

Because the woman speaking...

Was not Melissa.

Was not Lauren.

Was not Evelyn.

It was someone else.

Someone nobody suspected.

Someone who had been present at every major moment of my life.

And then Samantha whispered the name.

"Please..."

"Rebecca..."

The recording cut off.

Everyone turned toward my attorney.

Rebecca Stone.

My best ally.

The woman who helped me expose my husband.

The woman who had been beside me from the beginning.

She looked as shocked as everyone else.

But there was one problem.

The audio had not been edited.

May you like

And Samantha had clearly said her name.

Rebecca.
