Part 4: The Witness Who Changed the Entire Case

When Detective Harris said the words "It wasn't Adrian," I felt the room spin.

For weeks, every piece of evidence had pointed to my husband.

The forged insurance documents.

The wire transfer.

The traffic camera.

The 911 call.

The threatening messages.

Everything.

"So who gave the order?" I asked.

The detective looked down at the file before answering.

"That's what shocked us."

An hour later, Rebecca and I arrived at the police station.

A man in his late twenties sat alone inside an interview room.

His hands trembled around a paper coffee cup.

Dark circles hung beneath his eyes as though he hadn't slept in weeks.

"This is Noah Briggs," Detective Harris said.

"He worked at Miles Granger's garage."

Noah looked at me with guilt written across his face.

"I'm so sorry."

"They were beautiful kids."

I couldn't speak.

I simply nodded.

Detective Harris started the recorder.

"Mr. Briggs..."

"Tell us exactly what happened."

Noah took a long breath.

"About a week before the crash..."

"...a woman came into the garage."

I frowned.

"A woman?"

"Yes."

"Blonde."

"Designer clothes."

"Very expensive purse."

Rebecca immediately looked at me.

Melissa.

"Did you know her name?"

"No."

"Not then."

"But I recognized her from the news after the funeral."

He swallowed.

"She was the one."

The room became silent.

"What did she want?"

Detective Harris asked.

Noah rubbed his forehead.

"She asked for Miles."

"They talked inside the office."

"I wasn't supposed to hear anything."

"But the office door didn't close completely."

"What did you hear?"

He hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"I heard her say..."

"It has to look like an accident."

Every hair on my arms stood up.

Noah continued.

"At first I thought they were talking about insurance fraud."

"Cars disappear all the time."

"People fake thefts."

"I figured it was something like that."

He looked at me.

"I never imagined children were involved."

"What happened next?"

"Miles asked..."

"...'Who's going to be driving?'"

Rebecca held her breath.

Noah answered from memory.

"The woman laughed."

Then he repeated Melissa's exact words.

'Not the person we're collecting the money from.'

My heart stopped.

She had known.

From the very beginning.

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"Did Adrian attend that meeting?"

"No."

"Not while I was there."

"But..."

"But what?"

"About twenty minutes later..."

"...a man arrived."

He slid a photograph across the table.

Adrian.

"Was this him?"

Noah nodded immediately.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"They went into the office together."

"Could you hear them?"

"No."

"But when they came out..."

He looked down.

"Adrian handed Miles an envelope."

"Cash?"

"I think so."

"It looked thick."

Detective Harris opened another folder.

"We searched the garage yesterday."

"What did you find?"

Noah looked surprised.

"You found the safe?"

The detective smiled slightly.

"We did."

Inside the safe...

Police recovered $31,000 in cash.

The bills matched the withdrawal Adrian had made from his business account the morning after meeting Melissa.

"There was something else."

Detective Harris added.

"A notebook."

He placed it on the table.

Miles Granger's handwriting covered every page.

Customer names.

Repair orders.

Payments.

Then one entry stood out.

No customer name.

Only two initials.

A.M.

Beside them...

One handwritten sentence.

Delay brake failure. Highway only.

The room became completely silent.

Rebecca slowly closed her eyes.

"He actually wrote it down..."

Detective Harris nodded.

"Criminals become careless when they think they're smarter than everyone else."

Noah wasn't finished.

"I remembered something else after I saw the funeral on television."

"What?"

"The woman..."

"Melissa..."

"She asked one strange question."

"What question?"

Noah swallowed hard.

"She asked how long it would take before the brakes completely failed."

Detective Harris replied,

"What did Miles tell her?"

Noah answered softly.

"He said..."

'Depends how many children are in the vehicle.'

I felt sick.

There it was.

The moment they both knew.

Children would be inside.

Neither of them walked away.

Neither of them called police.

Neither of them stopped the plan.

Instead...

They paid for it.

The interview ended after nearly three hours.

As we stood to leave, Noah quietly stopped me.

"Mrs. Mercer..."

I turned.

"I almost called the police before the crash."

My heart tightened.

"What happened?"

"I got scared."

He stared at the floor.

"I told myself it wasn't my business."

Tears filled his eyes.

"If I'd made that call..."

"...your babies might still be alive."

I gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You were wrong."

He looked up.

"But today..."

"You finally did the right thing."

That evening, Detective Harris called with one final update.

"Miles Granger has agreed to cooperate."

I frowned.

"He confessed?"

"He wants a plea agreement."

"For what?"

The detective's voice grew quieter.

"He says Adrian and Melissa didn't come up with the plan."

I froze.

"What do you mean?"

"There was another person."

"Someone who financed everything."

Someone...

Who had paid for the insurance increases.

Paid for the brake sabotage.

Paid for Melissa's apartment.

And according to Miles...

That person had attended my wedding.

Held my twins when they were born.

May you like

And called herself...

My friend.
