Chapter 1 - The Door That Locked Behind Them

She thought one vicious attack inside a private hospital suite would destroy a billionaire’s marriage forever.
She had no idea she was creating the evidence that would ruin her own life.
The sound of the impact echoed through the luxury hospital room before anyone could understand what had happened.
Khloe Thorne was seven months pregnant.
After spending hours downstairs at the annual Thorne Foundation Charity Gala, smiling for photographers and answering questions about motherhood, philanthropy, and her husband’s growing business empire, she had finally escaped upstairs.
The gala occupied three floors of the Grand Haven Medical Center, one of the most exclusive private hospitals in the city. Marcus Thorne had funded the hospital’s new neonatal research wing, and the evening had brought politicians, donors, executives, celebrities, and reporters together beneath chandeliers and cameras.
Khloe had smiled through all of it.
She had smiled when strangers touched her arm.
She had smiled when women she barely knew asked whether pregnancy had changed her body.
She had smiled when reporters asked whether she was worried about raising a child under public attention.
And she had smiled when Isabella Rossi approached Marcus.
That had been the hardest part.
For months, Isabella had been appearing wherever Marcus went.
At business dinners.
Foundation meetings.
Private charity events.
Always elegant.
Always perfectly dressed.
Always pretending her interest in Marcus was professional.
But Khloe noticed the small things.
The way Isabella touched Marcus’s arm and allowed her fingers to remain there a second too long.
The way she watched him when she believed nobody was looking.
The way her smile disappeared whenever Marcus placed his hand against Khloe’s back.
Tonight, Khloe had finally become exhausted.
Her doctor had reserved a private recovery suite upstairs in case she needed to rest.
Marcus had kissed her forehead.
“Twenty minutes,” he promised. “Then I’m coming up.”
Khloe smiled.
“Thirty.”
“Twenty.”
“Marcus.”
He laughed.
“Fine. Thirty.”
She entered the private suite alone.
Or so she thought.
The door closed behind her.
She walked toward the table.
And then she heard the lock.
Khloe turned.
Isabella stood beside the door.
The deep red gown she wore looked almost black beneath the warm golden lights.
Her hand remained on the lock.
Khloe frowned.
“What are you doing?”
Isabella smiled.
For weeks, her cruelty had been subtle.
Tonight, there was nothing subtle about her expression.
“You were never supposed to stand beside him.”
Khloe stared.
“Open the door.”
“You were supposed to be temporary.”
Khloe took a step back.
“What are you talking about?”
Isabella moved closer.
Her voice was quiet.
Cold.
“You were supposed to smile for cameras, give him the child he wanted, and disappear.”
Khloe’s face changed.
“Leave.”
Isabella laughed softly.
“You really think he loves you?”
Khloe placed one hand against the edge of the table.
“I’m not doing this.”
“You already did.”
“Open the door.”
Instead, Isabella stepped closer.
“You took something that belonged to me.”
Khloe’s eyes narrowed.
“Marcus has never belonged to you.”
For the first time, Isabella’s smile disappeared.
The slap came so quickly Khloe barely saw the movement.
Her head turned.
Pain flashed across her face.
For one second, she simply stared.
Then Isabella shoved her.
Khloe stumbled backward.
Her body struck the marble edge of the table.
Pain rushed through her.
Her hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.
“Isabella.”
Her voice shook.
“Stop.”
But Isabella had crossed the line.
Months of jealousy.
Months of resentment.
Months of believing that Marcus Thorne should have chosen her.
Everything erupted at once.
She shoved Khloe again.
A crystal glass fell.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Khloe tried to hold onto the table.
But Isabella moved forward.
And with one vicious motion, sent her collapsing.
Khloe hit the floor.
Her breath disappeared.
Her arms wrapped protectively around her stomach.
For several terrifying seconds, she could not speak.
Isabella stood over her.
“You should have known your place.”
Khloe looked up.
Her eyes were filled with pain.
But not fear.
That angered Isabella more.
She raised her foot.
Then—
The door flew open.
“Khloe!”
Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway.
Still wearing the black tuxedo from the gala, he stared at his wife.
Then at Isabella.
Behind him stood Elaine Parker, the event coordinator.
Nobody moved.
The room looked frozen.
Broken crystal.
A pregnant woman on the floor.
Isabella standing above her.
Marcus’s face lost all color.
He dropped to his knees beside Khloe.
“Khloe.”
She grabbed his sleeve.
“The baby.”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Get a doctor.”
Elaine ran.
Isabella suddenly changed.
The rage disappeared.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She attacked me.”
Marcus slowly turned.
Isabella pointed toward Khloe.
“I was defending myself.”
Her voice trembled.
“She became jealous. She locked the door. She—”
Marcus stared at her.
The room was silent.
Isabella began crying.
Perfect tears.
Perfectly timed.
For one brief moment, uncertainty filled the hallway.
Then a voice spoke behind them.
“That is not what happened.”
Everyone turned.
A hospital security supervisor stood outside the suite.
Beside him was a tall gray-haired man wearing a dark suit.
Dr. Gabriel Reyes.
Chief of Trauma Medicine.
And Khloe’s uncle.
He looked past everyone.
Toward the security camera hidden near the ceiling.
Then back at Isabella.
“Miss Rossi,” he said quietly.
May you like
“You may want to stop talking.”
