PART 2 — THE SECRET IN LUCAS’S PHOTOS

PART 2 — THE SECRET IN LUCAS’S PHOTOS

Ethan kept staring at the photograph.

His fingers trembled.

Because the face looking back at him wasn't just his brother.

It was a version of Lucas he hadn't seen in years.

Happy.

Actually happy.

Lucas was standing outside a rehabilitation center garden, wearing a simple gray hoodie.

Beside him was Maya.

Not the Maya everyone at Oakridge knew.

Not the girl who walked carefully through hallways.

Not the girl who tried to disappear.

This Maya was smiling.

A real smile.

The kind that reached her eyes.

Ethan swallowed.

His brother had died two years ago.

And in those final months...

Nobody knew Lucas had been meeting someone.

Nobody knew he had found a friend.

Nobody knew that friend was Maya.

He turned the photograph over.

His heart stopped.

Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.

Lucas’s handwriting.

Four words.

Only four.

She saved me too.

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.

“Maya.”

His voice was quiet.

Almost afraid.

She sat at the bottom of the stairs, holding her injured leg, tears running down her face.

“Give them back.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

She shook her head.

“Please, Ethan.”

“I need to understand.”

The hallway was silent.

Everyone was listening.

Everyone wanted the answer.

Who was Maya?

Why did she have Lucas’s pictures?

How did she know his brother?

Maya looked around.

All those eyes.

All those questions.

The exact thing she had spent years avoiding.

Being seen.

But not for who she was.

For what happened to her.

She whispered:

“Lucas was my friend.”

The words shocked everyone.

A student near the stairs gasped.

“His brother?”

“She knew Lucas?”

Ethan slowly sat down.

Still holding the photos.

“My brother never told me.”

Maya looked away.

“I know.”

That hurt.

More than she expected.

Because Lucas had told Ethan everything.

Or at least...

He thought he had.

At the top of the stairs, Vanessa watched.

And for the first time all day...

Her perfect expression disappeared.

She knew.

She knew this was coming.

Because she had found the truth before anyone else.

Weeks ago.

When she saw Maya leaving the old rehabilitation center.

At first, Vanessa didn't care.

Then she saw the note.

A folded piece of paper sticking out of Maya's notebook.

Lucas's handwriting.

She had recognized the name.

Everyone knew Lucas Hawthorne.

Ethan’s older brother.

The boy who died too young.

The boy everyone still talked about.

Vanessa took the note.

Read it.

And discovered the truth.

If you ever go to Oakridge, find Ethan.

That was all it said.

But Vanessa understood.

Maya wasn't random.

She had a connection.

A connection to the one person Ethan still missed.

And Vanessa hated that.

Because Ethan was changing.

Before Maya arrived, Ethan was focused on her.

On their relationship.

On their future.

Then Maya came.

And Ethan started noticing someone else.

Someone he wanted to protect.

Someone he respected.

Vanessa couldn't stand it.

Ethan looked at Maya.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Maya gave a small, painful smile.

“Because I knew what would happen.”

“What?”

“You would look at me differently.”

Ethan frowned.

“No, I wouldn't.”

“Yes, you would.”

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone does.”

The hallway became quieter.

Maya looked down.

“People hear my story and suddenly I'm not Maya anymore.”

A pause.

“I'm the girl who got hurt.”

“The girl who survived.”

“The girl people feel sorry for.”

Ethan’s expression softened.

“And Lucas?”

Maya smiled slightly.

“Lucas didn't do that.”

She touched the edge of one photo.

“He never told me I was brave.”

Ethan looked confused.

“He didn't?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“He said something better.”

The hallway waited.

“He said, ‘You don't have to pretend this doesn't hurt.’”

Ethan looked down.

Because that sounded exactly like Lucas.

Lucas was always like that.

He never gave fake encouragement.

He gave honesty.

Maya continued.

“When I met him, I was angry.”

She looked at her prosthetic leg.

“I hated everyone.”

“I hated doctors.”

“I hated people telling me everything would be okay.”

A pause.

“I didn't want to learn how to walk again.”

Ethan listened.

“He just sat beside me.”

“And one day he said…”

Her voice became softer.

“‘You lost something important. You're allowed to grieve it.’”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

Because he knew Lucas.

And suddenly he understood.

His brother wasn't trying to fix her.

He was simply there.

The way he always was.

Ethan looked at the photos again.

“How long did you know him?”

“Six months.”

“Six months?”

Maya nodded.

“After my surgery.”

She swallowed.

“He was going through his own problems.”

Ethan looked away.

He knew.

Lucas had been struggling.

The accident had happened shortly after Lucas started visiting the rehabilitation center.

But nobody knew why.

Nobody knew he had been trying to help someone else while he was fighting his own pain.

Maya whispered:

“He talked about you all the time.”

Ethan gave a weak laugh.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“He said you acted like you didn't care about anything.”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“That sounds like him.”

“He said you were stubborn.”

“Definitely him.”

“He said you were loyal.”

Ethan stopped.

That one hurt.

Because Lucas was gone.

And he never got to hear his brother say those things.

Then Vanessa spoke.

Loud enough for everyone to hear.

“She is lying.”

Every head turned.

Vanessa slowly walked down the stairs.

Her face was calm again.

Almost.

“Maya is manipulating you.”

Ethan stood.

“What?”

Vanessa pointed at the photos.

“Think about it.”

“She suddenly appears at this school.”

“She has pictures of your dead brother.”

“And now everyone feels sorry for her.”

Maya looked hurt.

“That's not true.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“She wanted you to find those.”

Ethan stared at Vanessa.

“No.”

“She planned this.”

“No.”

“She used Lucas.”

That word changed everything.

Ethan’s face darkened.

“Don't say that.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I'm trying to protect you.”

Ethan laughed.

A cold laugh.

“Protect me?”

“Yes.”

“By accusing someone my brother cared about?”

Vanessa froze.

Because that was the first time Ethan admitted it.

Lucas cared about Maya.

And everyone heard.

Maya looked down.

“I never wanted this.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“I believe you.”

That simple sentence almost broke her.

Because she had spent so long expecting people not to.

Then Ethan looked back at Vanessa.

“How did you know about Lucas’s note?”

Vanessa went still.

Just for a second.

But Ethan noticed.

“What note?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Maya said someone found it.”

Silence.

The crowd began whispering.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I…”

She looked around.

Searching for an excuse.

But there wasn't one.

Then a small voice came from the hallway.

“I know what happened.”

Everyone turned.

A freshman girl stood near the lockers.

She was holding her phone.

Her hands were shaking.

“I recorded something.”

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“What?”

The girl looked at Ethan.

“I think you need to see it.”

She unlocked her phone.

And pressed play.

The hallway watched.

And the truth began playing frame by frame.

Vanessa standing behind Maya.

Her hand on the backpack.

The pull.

The shove.

The fall.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

Until the video ended.

Then Ethan slowly looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And the person everyone thought was perfect...

Finally had nowhere left to hide.
