PART 6 — THE HIDDEN ENEMY

PART 6 — THE HIDDEN ENEMY

For a long moment, Ethan just stood there.

Phone still pressed against his ear.

The call had ended.

But the voice remained.

A threat.

A warning.

A reminder.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew they were searching.

Maya looked at him.

She didn't ask again.

She already knew from his face.

“What did they say?”

Ethan lowered the phone slowly.

His jaw tightened.

“They know about us.”

Maya’s expression changed.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

A pause.

“But they know about Lucas.”

The wind moved through the empty parking lot.

For the first time since everything began, Ethan felt something he hadn't felt before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Maya.

“Ethan.”

Maya’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You need to tell me.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“Everything.”

She looked directly at him.

“No more protecting me.”

The words hit him.

Because they sounded exactly like something Lucas would say.

Ethan nodded.

“Okay.”

A pause.

“Then no more secrets.”

They returned to Oakridge.

Not because they felt safe.

Because they needed answers.

Lucas had spent years there.

He knew people.

He knew places.

And maybe he had left something behind.

Something hidden.

The school looked completely normal.

Students walked through hallways.

Teachers taught classes.

Nobody knew there was a mystery unfolding underneath everything.

Maya stopped near the old library.

“Lucas liked this place.”

Ethan looked surprised.

“You came here with him?”

She nodded.

“Sometimes.”

A small smile appeared.

“He said libraries were the only places where people were quiet enough to think.”

Ethan smiled sadly.

“That sounds like him.”

They walked inside.

The librarian recognized Ethan immediately.

“Lucas’s brother.”

Ethan froze.

“You knew him?”

The woman smiled.

“Everyone knew Lucas.”

A pause.

“He was always asking questions.”

“What kind of questions?”

The librarian looked uncomfortable.

“Strange ones.”

“Like what?”

She lowered her voice.

“About people.”

Ethan frowned.

“People?”

She nodded.

“He believed everyone was hiding something.”

The librarian opened an old drawer.

She pulled out a box.

“This was his.”

Ethan stared.

“Why do you have it?”

“He asked me to keep it.”

“When?”

She hesitated.

“Two days before he died.”

The air disappeared.

Maya stepped closer.

“What’s inside?”

The librarian handed it over.

“I never opened it.”

Ethan lifted the lid.

Inside were notebooks.

Photos.

Receipts.

And a small recorder.

Lucas had been investigating.

Everything.

Ethan opened the first notebook.

The first page had one sentence:

The truth about Maya is bigger than she knows.

Maya stopped breathing.

“What?”

Ethan turned the page.

More notes.

Dates.

Names.

And one name repeated again.

Daniel Reeves.

“He was following me.”

Maya whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

She stared at the notebook.

“Daniel knew about me before Lucas.”

“How?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Another page.

A list of patients.

Names.

Dates.

Accidents.

And beside some names...

A symbol.

A circle with a line through it.

Ethan pointed.

“What is that?”

The librarian looked shocked.

“I've seen that before.”

“Where?”

She looked nervous.

“On documents Lucas asked me to copy.”

“What documents?”

She swallowed.

“Documents from the rehabilitation center.”

Ethan picked up the recorder.

His hands shook.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Lucas’s voice.

“If you found this…”

A pause.

“Then I was right.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

His brother’s voice.

Again.

“I need you to listen carefully.”

Maya moved closer.

Lucas continued:

“There is someone inside the system.”

“The accidents.”

“The records.”

“The disappearances.”

A pause.

“None of it is random.”

Ethan’s heart raced.

Lucas continued.

“And Maya…”

Silence.

Then:

“If you're hearing this, I'm sorry.”

Maya covered her mouth.

Lucas’s voice softened.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But I couldn't risk it.”

A pause.

“You already lost enough.”

Tears formed in Maya’s eyes.

Lucas continued.

“Your accident wasn't just an accident.”

Maya froze.

The room felt smaller.

Ethan looked at her.

Lucas’s voice continued:

“Someone chose you.”

A pause.

“And I found out why.”

The recorder crackled.

Then:

“You are connected to something bigger.”

The audio stopped.

Everyone stared.

Maya slowly shook her head.

“No.”

Ethan reached for her.

“Maya…”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“My accident was random.”

She looked at him.

“I was just unlucky.”

Ethan didn't know what to say.

Because he wanted to believe that too.

Then the recorder played one final hidden section.

A voice that wasn't Lucas.

A man.

Daniel.

“I know what you found.”

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“You should have stopped.”

A pause.

“Now you’re forcing me to clean up another mistake.”

The audio ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because they finally understood.

Lucas wasn't investigating a mystery.

He was investigating a person.

And that person knew.

Suddenly, the library door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

Maya immediately recognized him.

Her face went white.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Who is it?”

She couldn't answer.

Because she already knew.

The man smiled.

“Maya.”

Her body froze.

Ethan stepped in front of her.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

Then smiled.

“I'm the person Lucas was trying to expose.”

A pause.

“Daniel Reeves.”

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“I hoped you would never find out.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

“You killed Lucas.”

Daniel didn't deny it.

Instead, he said:

“Your brother was too curious.”

A pause.

“He wanted the truth.”

He looked at Maya.

“And now you do too.”

Maya whispered:

“What did you do to me?”

Daniel smiled.

A terrifying smile.

“That is the question you've been asking your entire life.”

May you like

Then he stepped closer.

“And the answer will destroy everything you believe about your accident.”
