PART 7 — THE ACCIDENT WAS NEVER RANDOM

PART 7 — THE ACCIDENT WAS NEVER RANDOM

The words echoed through the library.

The answer will destroy everything you believe about your accident.

Maya felt like the floor beneath her had disappeared.

For years, she had lived with one story.

One painful memory.

One explanation.

A rainy night.

A speeding car.

A mistake.

An accident.

She had rebuilt her entire life around accepting that.

And now Daniel Reeves stood in front of her telling her that everything was a lie.

Ethan stepped forward.

His voice was filled with anger.

“You don’t get to walk in here and talk about her life like it’s a puzzle.”

Daniel looked at him calmly.

“You sound like Lucas.”

That sentence changed Ethan’s expression.

Because Lucas had said the same thing.

People compared them often.

But now, hearing it from this man...

It felt like a threat.

“What did you do?”

Ethan demanded.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at Maya.

“Do you remember the night of your accident?”

Maya swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

Her fingers tightened.

“Yes.”

Daniel tilted his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“You remember what you were told.”

Maya froze.

The memories came rushing back.

Rain.

Headlights.

The sound of glass breaking.

The pain.

The hospital.

But then...

Something strange.

Something she had forgotten.

A voice.

A man speaking.

A sentence she had never understood.

"Don't tell them what you saw."

Maya’s breathing changed.

Ethan noticed.

“Maya?”

She looked terrified.

“I…”

She closed her eyes.

“There was someone there.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Finally.”

Ethan looked between them.

“Someone was there?”

Maya nodded slowly.

“I thought it was a dream.”

She pressed a hand against her forehead.

“After the accident, I kept having this memory.”

“Someone was standing beside the car.”

“A man.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Was it you?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Which was an answer.

The librarian quietly stepped away.

She reached for the phone.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t.”

The single word froze her.

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

There was something frightening about how certain he sounded.

Ethan noticed too.

This man wasn't someone who lost control.

He was someone used to having it.

“Who are you really?”

Ethan asked.

Daniel looked at him.

“You think I’m the villain because Lucas made you believe that.”

A pause.

“But Lucas didn't know everything.”

Maya stared.

“Then tell me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You deserve to know.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Not from you.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Your accident wasn't about you.”

Maya frowned.

“What?”

“It was about your father.”

The room went silent.

Maya’s face changed.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father was involved in something.”

“Something dangerous.”

Maya shook her head.

“My father died before I was born.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

Ethan looked confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel walked slowly toward the table.

“The Sterling Project.”

Maya froze.

That name.

She had heard it before.

But where?

Then she remembered.

A document.

A childhood file.

A name her mother once told her never to ask about.

“What is the Sterling Project?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your family knows.”

“My family?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And they hid it from you.”

Maya stepped back.

“No.”

She refused to believe it.

Her entire life had already changed.

Lucas.

The accident.

Daniel.

She couldn't lose her family too.

“You're lying.”

Daniel looked almost sorry.

“I wish I was.”

He reached into his coat.

Ethan immediately moved.

“Don’t.”

Daniel slowly pulled out a small envelope.

Then placed it on the table.

“This belonged to Lucas.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“He found this before he died.”

Maya stared.

“How did you get it?”

Daniel smiled.

“Because Lucas came to me.”

Ethan’s anger exploded.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Daniel looked at him.

“He wanted answers.”

“He thought I was the enemy.”

A pause.

“He was wrong.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You literally admitted he died because of this.”

Daniel’s expression changed slightly.

“He made a choice.”

The room became cold.

“What choice?”

Daniel looked at Maya.

“He chose to protect you.”

Maya felt tears forming.

Again.

Lucas.

Always Lucas.

Even now.

Ethan grabbed the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Lucas’s.

Maya watched as Ethan opened it.

His face changed.

“What does it say?”

He didn’t answer.

“Maya…”

She stepped closer.

“What?”

Ethan handed her the letter.

Her hands shook.

She read.

Maya,

If you are reading this, something happened.

I tried to stop it.

I tried to find the truth.

But I need you to understand one thing.

Your accident was not meant to hurt you.

Maya stopped.

Not meant to hurt her?

Then what?

She kept reading.

Someone was trying to find something your father left behind.

Something hidden before you were born.

Something your family protected.

Her heart raced.

Then the final line:

And the person you should fear most is not Daniel Reeves.

Maya looked up.

Everyone froze.

Ethan grabbed the paper.

“What?”

Maya’s hands trembled.

Because underneath Lucas’s handwriting...

There was another sentence.

Written later.

By someone else.

The person you should fear is the one who raised you.

The silence was unbearable.

Maya stared.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Maya…”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“My family wouldn't.”

Daniel watched her.

“You still trust them.”

It wasn't a question.

It was an observation.

Maya looked at him.

“What do you know?”

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“Your mother wasn't killed in an accident.”

Maya stopped breathing.

“What?”

Ethan looked shocked.

Daniel continued.

“She was trying to expose the same secret.”

Maya’s knees weakened.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You’re lying.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I knew your mother.”

A pause.

“She asked me for help.”

The room spun.

Because suddenly...

The mystery was bigger than Lucas.

Bigger than Oakridge.

Bigger than the accident.

It went back years.

To before Maya was even born.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

A familiar voice.

But this time...

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone they knew.

“Maya.”

She heard it.

Her blood turned cold.

Because the voice belonged to someone from her own family.

Someone who should have been protecting her.

Someone who had been pretending not to know anything.

“Maya, listen carefully.”

A pause.

“Do not trust Daniel.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

The voice continued:

“And do not trust Ethan.”

The call ended.

Everyone stood frozen.

Because now they had a new question.

May you like

Who was telling the truth?

And who had been lying all along?
