PART 10 — THE LAST SECRET LUCAS LEFT BEHIND

PART 10 — THE LAST SECRET LUCAS LEFT BEHIND

The words on the document were impossible to ignore.

One sentence.

One warning.

One final piece of Lucas’s unfinished investigation.

The person who betrayed us is someone you love.

Maya stared at the paper.

Her hands went cold.

Because after everything...

After Daniel.

After the accident.

After the lies.

She thought there could not possibly be another betrayal.

She was wrong.

The police had taken Daniel away.

The Hawthorne security team was being questioned.

The house was being searched.

And yet, inside the chaos...

Maya only saw one thing.

That sentence.

Over and over.

Someone you love.

Her mind raced.

Who?

Her mother?

No.

She had lied.

She had disappeared.

But she came back to protect her.

Ethan?

The thought hurt.

Immediately.

“No.”

She whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

She quickly folded the paper.

“Nothing.”

But he knew her too well now.

“What did you find?”

Maya hesitated.

Then handed it to him.

Ethan read the sentence.

His face changed.

Because he understood the danger.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had access to Lucas.

Someone who knew everything.

“We need to figure out who wrote this.”

Ethan said.

Maya looked at him.

“Lucas did.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But when?”

They searched the paper.

The handwriting.

The ink.

The date.

Nothing.

Then Ethan noticed something.

The corner.

A small mark.

A symbol.

The same circle with a line through it.

The one from Lucas’s notes.

“What is that?”

Maya asked.

Ethan looked at the symbol.

“I don't know.”

Then Daniel’s words came back.

Your father’s house.

The truth started here.

And Lucas’s warning.

The person you should fear most is the one who raised you.

Maya suddenly stood.

“Wait.”

Ethan looked up.

“What?”

“My mother.”

He frowned.

“What about her?”

“She raised me.”

A pause.

“But she wasn't the only person who raised me.”

Ethan understood.

Family.

Guardians.

People around her.

People she trusted.

“Who?”

Maya’s face went pale.

“One person.”

She looked toward the road.

“The person who took care of everything after my mother disappeared.”

They searched through old family records.

Old photos.

Old documents.

And then they found the name.

Maya’s hands shook.

Because it belonged to someone she never questioned.

Someone who was always there.

At birthdays.

At holidays.

At family events.

Someone who always smiled.

Someone everyone trusted.

Her uncle.

Richard Sterling.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You know him?”

Maya nodded slowly.

“My mother’s brother.”

A pause.

“He helped raise me after my accident.”

The room became silent.

Ethan looked at the document again.

“The person who betrayed us is someone you love.”

Maya closed her eyes.

“No.”

But deep down...

She already knew.

They found Richard at the Sterling Foundation headquarters.

The building was still operating.

Still beautiful.

Still respected.

The same place where millions were donated every year.

The same place everyone believed represented kindness.

Maya walked through the lobby.

People recognized her.

They smiled.

“Miss Sterling.”

They had no idea.

None of them knew.

The woman they admired had spent years searching for a truth hidden inside her own family.

Richard was in his office.

Standing by the window.

Waiting.

As if he knew they were coming.

When Maya entered, he smiled.

“Maya.”

Her heart broke.

Because he sounded exactly the same.

Warm.

Familiar.

Safe.

“How long?”

The smile disappeared.

“What?”

“How long did you know?”

Richard looked at Ethan.

Then back at Maya.

And slowly...

He sat down.

“You found out.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

“You knew.”

A long silence.

Then Richard sighed.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed her.

“You knew about my father?”

“Yes.”

“The accident?”

“Yes.”

“Lucas?”

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

Maya stepped back.

She felt like she couldn't breathe.

“How could you?”

Richard looked at her.

“I was trying to protect this family.”

The same words.

Always.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

A tear fell.

“Everyone hurts me and calls it protection.”

Richard stood.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

His face changed.

For the first time, she saw something behind the kindness.

Fear.

“Your father discovered something dangerous.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“You don't.”

He stepped closer.

“He discovered the Sterling family wasn't just wealthy.”

A pause.

“They were powerful.”

“The kind of powerful where people disappear.”

Maya froze.

Richard continued.

“He wanted to expose everyone.”

“He wanted to destroy generations of work.”

Maya looked disgusted.

“So you stopped him.”

Richard didn't answer.

That was enough.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You let Lucas die.”

Richard looked at him.

“No.”

“Then what?”

A pause.

“I tried to warn him.”

Ethan laughed.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Richard looked at Maya.

“I told him to stop.”

“But he wouldn’t.”

His voice became quiet.

“He was too much like your father.”

Maya felt tears burning.

“You were the one who called him that night.”

Richard looked away.

Yes.

Another truth.

“I told him to meet me.”

“Why?”

“To scare him.”

Maya’s face hardened.

“And?”

Richard swallowed.

“I followed him.”

The room went silent.

“I saw the accident.”

Ethan’s fists clenched.

“And you did nothing.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I thought he was dead.”

Maya shook her head.

“You left him.”

“I was afraid.”

That answer hurt more than anything.

Because fear had destroyed everyone.

Then Richard reached into his desk drawer.

He pulled out a small box.

“I kept this.”

Maya looked confused.

“What is it?”

“Something Lucas gave me.”

Her heart stopped.

“Lucas?”

Richard nodded.

“He knew.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Knew what?”

Richard opened the box.

Inside was a flash drive.

“He knew someone in the family was involved.”

Maya stared.

“Why would he give it to you?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Because he thought I would choose you over them.”

A pause.

“He was wrong.”

The flash drive contained one final video.

Lucas.

The last one.

His face appeared on the screen.

And this time...

He looked exhausted.

“Maya.”

Her eyes filled instantly.

“If you're watching this…”

He smiled sadly.

“I guess you found everything.”

Ethan stood silently.

Lucas continued.

“I’m sorry.”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But every person I trusted had a reason to hide the truth.”

A pause.

“And I didn’t know who was safe.”

Maya covered her mouth.

Lucas looked directly at the camera.

“Except you.”

Her tears fell.

“Because you never wanted anything from me.”

“You just listened.”

Lucas continued.

“If you found this, then Richard knows.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Maya looked at him.

Lucas’s voice continued.

“He was not the person who caused everything.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Lucas continued.

“He was scared.”

“He made mistakes.”

“But the person who started this…”

The video glitched.

Then the final sentence appeared.

Was someone who has been beside us the entire time.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then the flash drive beeped.

A hidden file appeared.

One name.

Ethan.

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Maya looked at him.

The file opened automatically.

A video.

Recorded two years earlier.

Lucas sitting with Ethan.

But Ethan wasn't alone.

Someone else was there.

Someone Maya recognized.

Someone she trusted.

Someone she never suspected.

The video showed them talking.

And then Lucas said:

“If anything happens to me…”

He looked at the person beside him.

“It's because you betrayed me.”

The camera turned.

And revealed the final secret.

May you like

The person sitting beside Lucas was...

Ethan’s own mother.
