PART 8 — THE FAMILY SECRET

PART 8 — THE FAMILY SECRET

The phone slipped from Ethan’s hand.

It hit the wooden table with a quiet sound.

But nobody moved.

Because the words were still hanging in the air.

Do not trust Daniel.

A pause.

And do not trust Ethan.

Maya looked between them.

Her heart was beating so fast it hurt.

For the first time since this nightmare began...

She didn't know who was standing beside her.

The person who protected her.

Or the person who had been leading her deeper into danger.

Ethan picked up the phone again.

The call was already gone.

He immediately tried calling back.

Nothing.

Unknown number.

Blocked.

“Who was it?”

Maya asked.

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Careful.

Ethan looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

That answer made the room colder.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Maya, I swear—”

She raised her hand.

Not to stop him.

To stop herself from falling apart.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.”

Her eyes filled.

“Everyone keeps hiding things from me.”

A pause.

“And I’m tired.”

Ethan had no response.

Because she was right.

Daniel watched silently.

Then he spoke.

“She’s finally asking the right questions.”

Ethan turned sharply.

“You don’t get to act like you’re on her side.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I never said I was.”

That honesty was somehow worse.

Maya stared.

“Then why are you helping us?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because Lucas was right about one thing.”

“What?”

“He believed you deserved the truth.”

A pause.

“And I agree.”

Ethan opened Lucas’s letter again.

There were more pages.

Pages they hadn't noticed.

At the bottom was a hidden message.

Written faintly.

Almost invisible.

Ethan held it toward the light.

“What is that?”

Maya looked closer.

Words slowly appeared.

Find the place where everything started.

Below it:

Your father’s house.

Maya froze.

“My father’s house?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your childhood home.”

“But it burned down.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what everyone told you.”

The room went silent.

Maya stared.

Another lie.

Another piece of her life that wasn't real.

They left the library before anyone noticed.

The drive was quiet.

Too quiet.

Ethan sat behind the wheel.

Maya stared out the window.

The city passed by.

People living normal lives.

While her entire past was collapsing.

After several minutes, Ethan spoke.

“You still think I’m involved?”

Maya didn't answer immediately.

“I don't know.”

The honesty hurt.

But Ethan appreciated it.

“At least you're telling the truth.”

She looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

A pause.

“I don't know what truth is anymore.”

The old Sterling property was outside the city.

Abandoned.

Hidden.

Covered by years of neglect.

The gates were rusted.

The house stood empty.

But Maya recognized it.

Even after all these years.

Because some memories live in the body.

Not the mind.

She stepped out of the car.

Her hands started shaking.

“This is where I lived.”

Ethan nodded.

“Are you okay?”

She looked at the house.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I need to know.”

The front door was locked.

Daniel stepped forward.

Maya looked at him.

“You have a key?”

He didn't answer.

He simply opened the door.

Ethan immediately noticed.

“How did you get that?”

Daniel looked away.

“I've been here before.”

Maya’s face tightened.

“When?”

No answer.

That was enough.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

But nothing had been destroyed.

Furniture.

Pictures.

Old books.

Like someone had left in a hurry.

Maya walked slowly through the hallway.

Then stopped.

A picture on the wall.

Her mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside a man Maya didn't recognize.

She picked it up.

“Who is this?”

Daniel looked.

His face changed.

“That’s your father.”

Maya stared.

Impossible.

She had never seen him.

Not once.

The man in the picture looked kind.

Happy.

Nothing like the person she imagined.

“What happened to him?”

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“He discovered the truth.”

Maya waited.

“And?”

Daniel looked at her.

“He tried to expose it.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Ethan turned.

“Did you hear that?”

Another sound.

A footstep.

Someone was inside.

Ethan moved in front of Maya.

Daniel did too.

For a second, they both looked at each other.

Neither trusted the other.

But both protected her.

The footsteps continued.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Then a voice:

“Maya.”

Her blood froze.

Because she knew that voice.

“Mom?”

No.

Impossible.

Her mother was dead.

She knew that.

Everyone knew.

A figure stepped into the hallway.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Maya couldn't breathe.

The woman looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya stepped backward.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No, you’re dead.”

The woman cried.

“I had to let everyone believe that.”

Maya shook her head.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Daniel.

Then Ethan.

Then back at Maya.

“I’m your mother.”

The world stopped.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Because even he looked shocked.

The woman walked closer.

“Maya…”

But Maya stepped away.

“Why?”

Her voice was full of pain.

“Why did you leave me?”

The woman closed her eyes.

“Because if I stayed…”

A pause.

“They would have killed you.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

A broken sound.

“They tried anyway.”

The woman looked down.

“I know.”

A tear fell.

“And Lucas died because of it.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?”

Maya’s mother looked at him.

“Lucas found me.”

Silence.

“He found the truth.”

She looked at Maya.

“And he was trying to bring me back to you.”

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the house.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from outside.

A car door.

Then another.

Multiple people.

Daniel whispered:

“They found us.”

Ethan grabbed Maya’s hand.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

His face finally showed fear.

“The people who have been hiding this secret for years.”

May you like

A pause.

“And they’re here to finish what they started.”
