Chapter 10 - The Promise

One year after the night that changed everything.
The grand ballroom of Alder House was illuminated once again, but tonight, there were no corporate executives, no cold politicians, and no formal pretenses.
Soft fairy lights hung from the crystal chandeliers, and the room was filled with warm yellow roses—Camille's favorite flower.
A small gathering of close friends, estate staff, and loved ones stood around the central altar.
Camille stood in an elegant, simple white lace gown, holding a bouquet of white freesia and yellow roses. Beside her stood Mason, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his eyes never leaving her face.
Standing between them as the flower girl was four-year-old Lily, wearing a miniature white dress and a crown of tiny daisies in her dark curls.
The officiant smiled down at the couple. "Mason, do you take Camille to be your wedded wife, to love, honor, and protect her, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," Mason said, his voice strong, clear, and filled with an absolute devotion that made Camille’s heart swell.
"And Camille, do you take Mason to be your wedded husband, to love, honor, and cherish him, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," Camille whispered, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes.
"Before we exchange rings," the officiant smiled, looking down at the little girl, "I believe someone has a special duty."
Lily stepped forward proudly, holding a velvet pillow containing two platinum bands.
Mason knelt down on one knee in front of the four-year-old girl, exactly as he had done on the night she had saved him.
"Lily Harper," Mason said softly, pulling a third, tiny velvet box from his pocket. Inside was a delicate gold bracelet engraved with small cheetah prints. "When I asked your mommy to marry me, I knew I was asking for the greatest gift in the world. But I also know that you two come as a team."
He slipped the tiny gold bracelet onto her little wrist.
"I promise to always protect your mommy," Mason whispered, his eyes shining. "I promise to always keep our home safe. And I promise to always listen when you have six important words to say."
Lily looked at her shiny new bracelet, then threw her tiny arms around Mason's neck, hugging him tightly.
"I love you, Daddy," Lily whispered into his ear.
Mason froze for a single second, his heart completely melting, before he wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her close against his chest.
"I love you too, my little cheetah," Mason whispered back.
He stood up, taking Camille's hand as they exchanged their rings beneath the brilliant, warm lights of the ballroom.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant declared. "You may kiss the bride."

As Mason leaned in and kissed Camille tenderly, the room erupted into warm applause, filled with the genuine cheers of people who loved them.
Outside, the warm summer night settled over Alder House—a house that was no longer a museum of cold wealth, but a sanctuary of love, truth, and an unbroken family that would never be parted again.
