Chapter 2 - The Trap in the Shadows

By eight o'clock, the main ballroom was filled with over two hundred people. The string quartet had transitioned to classical waltzes, their music floating over the dull roar of corporate conversation, clinking crystal, and polite laughter.

Mason Aldridge stood near the tall French doors, listening attentively to a senior senator from Illinois discuss cybersecurity regulations. Though his posture was composed, his sharp eyes constantly scanned the room. Mason had built his fortune on detecting anomalies—slight, barely perceptible flaws in complex systems.

And lately, the anomaly in his own house was his fiancée.

He watched Victoria across the room as she conversed with a high-profile real estate developer. Her gestures were theatrical, her laughter slightly too loud. Every time a member of the domestic staff passed her, her jaw would tighten, her eyes following them with an underlying disgust that she took no effort to hide from him when they were alone.

"You seem distracted, Mason," the senator noted, sipping his bourbon.

"Just keeping an eye on the event, Senator," Mason replied smoothly, pulling a crisp linen handkerchief from his pocket. "It's a heavy turnout tonight."

"Your firm is holding the digital keys to half the infrastructure in the Midwest. Of course people showed up," the politician chuckled. "And speaking of assets... Victoria looks radiant tonight. A fine family, the Langleys. Old money, deep roots."

"Yes," Mason said quietly, his eyes lingering on the hall leading toward his private office and the staff quarters. "Deep roots."

Meanwhile, upstairs in the master suite, Victoria stepped out into the quiet carpeted corridor. She wasn't holding champagne anymore. Her face was stripped of its charming social mask, replaced by a dark, calculated intensity.

She walked down the private stairs that led directly to the housekeeping quarters—an area strictly off-limits to party guests.

She had tried everything over the past four months to drive Camille Harper out. She had complained to Ruth Calder about dusty baseboards that were spotless. She had dropped an antique porcelain vase on the hardwood and claimed Camille had knocked it over with a vacuum cord. She had even suggested to Mason that hiring a young, attractive single mother posed a "security and reputational risk" to a high-profile home.

Mason had dismissed every single complaint. Worse, he had gently reminded Victoria that he made the final decisions regarding the estate's staff.

Victoria reached the door marked Staff Quarters - Room 3. She pulled a small velvet box from the pocket of her coat—a box containing an eighteen-karat diamond sapphire ring belonging to her mother, valued at over forty thousand dollars.

She slid a thin brass key into the lock—a key she had secretly copied from Ruth's master ring three days ago.

The door creaked open softly.

Inside, the room was dimly lit by a small nightlight shaped like a star. On the twin bed, little Lily was fast asleep, her plush teddy bear tucked tightly under her arm.

Victoria didn't look at the child. She moved directly to the small pine dresser beside the closet, pulled open the middle drawer containing Camille's neatly folded blouses, and shoved the velvet box deep into the back corner beneath a pile of cotton scarves.

She closed the drawer with a soft click.

"What are you doing in my mommy's room?"

Victoria froze.

She turned around slowly. Lily was sitting up in bed, rubbing her eyes with her small fists, her brown eyes staring at the intruder with sharp, unblinking clarity.

Victoria's expression turned vicious. She stepped close to the bed, bending down so her face was inches from the toddler's.

"You shut your mouth, you little rat," Victoria whispered, her voice laced with poison. "If you say one word, I'll make sure you and your pathetic mother are sleeping in the dirt by tomorrow morning."

May you like

Lily didn't cry. She stared back, her chest heaving, her small mouth set in a tight, stubborn line.

Victoria turned on her heel and slipped out the door, leaving the lock unlatched behind her.
