Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

Twenty minutes later, the party downstairs was reaching its peak.

Camille was returning from the butler's pantry carrying a silver tray of fresh champagne flutes. Her feet burned, and her back pounded with exhaustion, but she kept a neutral, polite smile on her face as she wove through the crowded ballroom.

As she stepped near the narrow side corridor that led toward the private study, a heavy hand gripped her upper arm.

Camille almost dropped the tray.

She turned to see Victoria standing in the dim light of the hallway, her face pale, her eyes wide with simulated distress.

"Camille," Victoria said loudly enough for two nearby guests to turn their heads. "Where is my sapphire ring?"

Camille blinked, startled. "I... I'm sorry, Miss Langley? I haven't seen your ring."

"Don't play stupid with me!" Victoria's voice rose sharply, cutting through the background hum of the string quartet. "I left it on the vanity in the master suite before the guests arrived. It's gone. And you were the only person assigned to turn down the master suite half an hour ago!"

Several more guests turned around. The music began to stammer as the violinists noticed the sudden shift in the room's energy.

"Miss Langley, I swear to you, I didn't see any ring," Camille said, her voice trembling but firm. She kept her arms steady, holding the heavy tray. "I changed the towels and made the bed. I didn't touch the vanity."

"You expect me to believe that?" Victoria sneered, stepping closer and lowering her voice into a sharp hiss. "A woman who can barely afford her daughter's shoes? You saw an opportunity, and you took it."

"Victoria, what is going on here?"

Mason pushed through the circle of onlookers, his face dark, his presence immediately commanding the room. Ruth Calder was right behind him, her brow furrowed with deep concern.

"Mason, thank God," Victoria sobbed, instantly transforming her tone into one of helpless outrage. She grabbed his arm. "My mother's heirloom sapphire ring is missing from the vanity. Camille was the only one upstairs."

"Did you check the bathroom counter?" Mason asked calmly, his eyes shifting from Victoria's frantic face to Camille's pale, steady gaze.

"Of course I checked! It's gone, Mason! She stole it!" Victoria declared, pointing an accusatory finger at Camille.

"I didn't steal anything, Mr. Aldridge," Camille said, looking directly into Mason's dark eyes. "You can search my coat, my pockets, or call the police right now. I have never touched anything in this house that didn't belong to me."

"Oh, please!" Victoria spat, taking a step toward Camille. "You probably hid it in your quarters before coming back down! I demand we search her room right now!"

"Victoria, that is enough," Mason said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "We are not going to conduct a search in front of two hundred guests."

"No, Mason! I want my ring back!" Victoria shouted, losing her composure entirely.

Driven by a sudden, hysterical rage, Victoria lunged forward, reaching out to grab Camille's shoulder to physically pull her toward the staff corridor.

Her hand gripped Camille's uniform sleeve, pulling forcefully. The silver tray tipped, and two champagne glasses shattered on the hardwood floor with a deafening crash.

Before Victoria could strike again, a tiny, piercing scream shattered the silence of the mansion.

"DON'T TOUCH MY MOMMY AGAIN!"
