Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

Two minutes felt like two hours. Nobody in the ballroom moved. Guests whispered behind their hands, eyes darting between the billionaire founder, his pale fiancée, and the maid holding her little girl tight against her apron.

Ruth Calder reappeared at the end of the hall.

In her white-gloved hands, she held a small, black velvet box.

She walked directly up to Mason and opened it. The eighty-carat sapphire ring caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling with brilliant blue fire.

"It was buried beneath the scarves, just as Lily said," Ruth reported quietly, her voice cold with disgust. "And the lock on the staff door was forced with an secondary master key."

Victoria backed away, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor. "Mason... listen to me... I did it for us! She was coming between us! You look at her differently, Mason! You look at that maid like she belongs here, and you look at me like I'm an invoice!"

"You put a stolen heirloom in an innocent woman's room," Mason said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. "You threatened a three-year-old child in her sleep. And you tried to destroy a mother's life in front of two hundred people."

"She's nobody!" Victoria shrieked, her regal composure completely collapsing into ugly, raw malice. "She's a glorified servant! She's nothing!"

"She works for a living," Mason said coldly. "Which makes her infinitely more respectable than you have ever been."

Mason pulled the heavy engagement ring from his own suit pocket—a ring he had taken to the jeweler yesterday for resizing—and tossed it carelessly into the shattered glass on the floor.

"Get out," Mason said.

"Mason—"

"Ruth, call security. Have Miss Langley escorted off the property immediately. Instruct the gate guards that her vehicle is barred from entering Alder House ever again."

"With pleasure, sir," Ruth said, signaling to two large security officers standing by the front doors.

Victoria looked around the room, searching for a single sympathetic face among the elite crowd she had spent her entire life trying to impress. Every head turned away. Every chin rose in quiet condemnation.

With a choked sob of rage and humiliation, Victoria grabbed the skirt of her green gown, turned on her heel, and rushed toward the grand entrance, escorted closely by the security guards.

The heavy front doors slammed shut behind her, the sound echoing through the mansion like a gunshot.

Mason turned back toward the hallway.

Camille was kneeling on the floor, holding Lily so tightly against her chest that her shoulders were shaking with quiet, exhausted sobs. Lily had her small arms wrapped around her mother's neck, her face buried in Camille's shoulder.

Mason walked past the shattered glass, knelt down beside them on the hardwood floor, and gently placed his large, warm hand over Lily's back.

"It's over, Camille," Mason said softly. "You're safe. Both of you."
