Chapter 7 - A New Day

Two months later, winter had settled over Lake Forest.

A thick, pristine layer of white snow covered the twelve acres of Alder House, transforming the stone walls and maple trees into a quiet winter wonderland.

In the main kitchen, the sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon, casting pale orange light across the polished granite counters.

Camille stood by the window, wearing a comfortable navy wool sweater and trousers, holding a iPad containing the week's maintenance and vendor schedules. As assistant estate manager, her life had transformed completely. Her days were spent organizing estate operations, coordinating with suppliers, and managing the staff with a gentle, empathetic hand that had won her the absolute devotion of every employee on the property.

The kitchen door pushed open, and Lily came marching in, wearing bright red snow boots, mittens, and a heavy winter coat over her clothes.

"Mommy! It snowed!" Lily squealed, her eyes round with wonder.

"I know, sweetie," Camille laughed, crouching down to zip up Lily's coat properly. "Did you ask Ruth if you could go outside?"

"I asked Mason!" a deep voice called out from the doorway.

Mason walked in, wearing a heavy tweed overcoat and leather gloves, carrying two wooden snow sleds over his shoulder.

"Mr. Mason," Camille said, standing up with a smile. "Don't you have a board meeting at nine?"

"Pushed it to eleven," Mason replied smoothly, winking at Lily. "Some things require immediate executive attention. Like testing the hill behind the stables."

Lily let out a gasp of pure delight. "The big hill?!"

"The biggest hill," Mason confirmed, setting the sleds down. "Are you ready, cheetah?"

"I'm ready!" Lily shouted, grabbing her little sled and pulling it toward the back doors.

Camille watched them step out into the crisp morning air. She stood by the warm glass, watching Mason pull Lily across the virgin snow, her laughter ringing out across the quiet estate—bright, free, and completely unbroken.

For the first time in her life, Camille felt a deep, overwhelming sense of peace. The terror of eviction, the threat of poverty, and the cruelty of people like Victoria were gone, replaced by a warmth that seemed to fill every room of the ancient stone house.

"He looks happy," Ruth said softly, walking up beside Camille with two mugs of coffee.

Camille looked at the older woman. "He does."

"He hasn't laughed like that since his parents passed away ten years ago," Ruth noted, handing a mug to Camille. "This house used to be a museum, my dear. Cold, quiet, and empty. You and that little girl brought a soul back into it."

Camille looked back out the window. Mason had just reached the top of the snow hill, sitting behind Lily on the large wooden sled. With a loud shout, they slid down the bank, snow spraying into the air as Lily's joyful screams echoed across the valley.

Camille smiled, raising the warm mug to her lips.
