PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK
Nobody spoke.
The last note of the lullaby disappeared into the dining room.
But the silence that followed felt louder than any sound.
Andrew stared at the maid.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
The song.
The scar.
The way his sons held onto her.
Everything was impossible.
Because Sophia was dead.
He had watched them lower her coffin.
He had stood beside the grave.
He had cried until there were no tears left.
So why was this woman standing in front of him?
Claire was the first person to move.
She laughed.
A nervous laugh.
A fake laugh.
“Andrew, this is ridiculous.”
But Andrew didn’t look at her.
His eyes stayed on the maid.
“What is your name?”
The woman hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Emma.”
Andrew frowned.
“Emma what?”
Her lips trembled.
“Emma Miller.”
Not Sophia.
Not the name he was waiting for.
A strange name.
A stranger.
But then Noah spoke.
His small voice cut through the room.
“Daddy…”
Andrew looked down.
“Yeah, buddy?”
Noah pointed at the maid.
“She knows Mommy.”
Andrew’s chest tightened.
He looked at Emma.
“Explain.”
Emma looked terrified.
Not of him.
Of the truth.
“I can’t.”
Andrew stepped closer.
“You walked into my house.”
“You took care of my children.”
“You sang the song only my wife knew.”
“Now you’re telling me you can’t explain?”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t plan this.”
“What?”
“I applied for a job.”
“I needed work.”
“I didn’t know who you were.”
Andrew froze.
“You didn’t know?”
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know this was your house.”
“Then why did you stay?”
Emma looked at the boys.
And her answer broke something inside him.
“Because they needed me.”
Claire immediately interrupted.
“That’s exactly what I warned you about.”
“She manipulated them.”
“She came here with an agenda.”
Andrew finally looked at Claire.
“Enough.”
The single word silenced her.
Because Andrew had never spoken to her like that.
Not once.
Claire’s face hardened.
“You’re seriously considering this?”
“I’m considering why my children trust a stranger more than they trust you.”
The words hit.
Claire stepped back.
Andrew immediately regretted saying it.
Not because it wasn’t true.
Because he realized it was true.
His sons were closer to this maid than the woman who had been living in their home for months.
Why?
He turned back.
“Emma.”
She looked at him.
“Come with me.”
Her eyes widened.
“Where?”
“The hospital.”
Claire’s face changed.
“No.”
Andrew looked at her.
“We’re doing a DNA test.”
The room went completely still.
Emma looked down.
She looked like she wanted to run.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she was afraid.
“Andrew…”
“Why are you scared?”
No answer.
That was all he needed.
A few hours later, the mansion was silent.
The twins were sleeping.
Emma sat alone in the guest room.
Andrew stood outside the door.
Watching through the small glass panel.
She was sitting on the edge of the bed.
Holding an old photograph.
His photograph.
Andrew froze.
She wasn’t supposed to have that.
He opened the door.
Emma quickly hid it.
“Where did you get that?”
She looked up.
No more pretending.
No more hiding.
“I found it.”
“Where?”
Her hands shook.
“In my things.”
Andrew stared.
“What things?”
Emma looked away.
“My belongings.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“When I woke up…”
Andrew froze.
“What?”
Emma’s voice broke.
“I woke up in a hospital.”
“Three years ago.”
His heart stopped.
She continued:
“I didn’t know my name.”
“I didn’t remember anything.”
“The doctors told me I was in an accident.”
Andrew stepped closer.
“What accident?”
Emma looked at him.
“A fire.”
The word hit him.
Fire.
Sophia’s accident.
The one that killed her.
Andrew’s face went pale.
“No.”
Emma cried silently.
“I spent months trying to remember.”
“Every night I had the same dream.”
“A little boy crying.”
“Two little boys.”
Andrew felt dizzy.
She continued:
“Then I heard a song.”
“The lullaby.”
“And suddenly I remembered.”
The room felt smaller.
“What did you remember?”
Emma looked at him.
And whispered:
“My name.”
A pause.
“My real name.”
Andrew couldn’t breathe.
“What is it?”
Her lips trembled.
“Sophia.”
The word destroyed him.
Andrew stepped back.
“No.”
Emma cried.
“I didn’t want to come here.”
“I was afraid.”
“I thought you had moved on.”
“I thought my children were happy.”
Andrew stared.
“My children?”
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward the room where the boys slept.
“Our children.”
Three years of grief.
Three years of loneliness.
Three years of believing she was gone.
All collapsing in one moment.
But before Andrew could speak…
A sound came from the doorway.
Claire.
She had heard everything.
Her face was no longer calm.
No longer elegant.
Only fear.
“You should have stayed dead.”
The sentence froze the room.
Andrew slowly turned.
“What did you say?”
Claire realized her mistake.
Too late.
Emma stood.
Tears falling.
Andrew looked at Claire.
“What do you know?”
Claire said nothing.
Andrew’s voice became colder.
“What do you know about my wife?”
The woman he trusted stepped back.
And for the first time…
Andrew saw the truth.
Claire wasn’t surprised Sophia was alive.
May you like
She was terrified.
Because she already knew.
