PART 5: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE FIRE

PART 5: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE FIRE
The room felt smaller.
Nobody looked away from Claire.
The woman who had spent months living in Andrew’s house.
The woman who kissed him.
The woman who held his children.
The woman who watched him mourn.
Was the same woman who knew Sophia was alive.
And now…
The same woman connected to the fire.
Andrew’s voice was barely controlled.
“Why?”
Claire cried.
“Andrew…”
“No.”
He stepped back.
“Don’t say my name.”
She froze.
“Tell me why.”
Claire looked at Sophia.
Then at the twins.
Then finally at Andrew.
“I was afraid.”
Sophia laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“Afraid?”
“You burned my life because you were afraid?”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”
Sophia stared.
“You don’t get to say that.”
“You don’t get to stand here and pretend you care.”
The words hit.
Because Sophia was right.
Claire wiped her tears.
“I loved Andrew.”
Andrew looked disgusted.
“That is not love.”
“I watched him break after you disappeared.”
“I was there.”
“I helped him.”
“I raised your children.”
Sophia’s face changed.
“Raised my children?”
She looked at Noah and Liam.
“They were never yours.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“I was the one who stayed.”
“And where were you?”
The question cut deep.
Sophia looked away.
Because the answer hurt.
She had been gone.
Even if it wasn’t her choice.
Claire saw the weakness.
“You weren’t there.”
“I was.”
Andrew immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Claire looked at him.
“You know it’s true.”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“You don’t get to use my wife’s suffering to excuse what you did.”
The room went quiet.
Then Victor laughed.
A cold, quiet laugh.
“Interesting.”
Everyone looked at him.
Victor stood near the doorway.
Enjoying the chaos.
“You all think this is about love.”
“It never was.”
Andrew looked at him.
“Then what is it about?”
Victor smiled.
“Power.”
The answer was simple.
And terrifying.
He walked slowly into the room.
“Your families have spent generations fighting over money.”
“Companies.”
“Names.”
“Legacy.”
Sophia looked at him.
“Why are you telling us this?”
Victor looked at her.
“Because I’m tired.”
“Tired of hiding.”
Andrew frowned.
“You expect us to trust you?”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“I expect you to listen.”
He placed a folder on the table.
Andrew stared.
“What is that?”
“The original documents.”
“From before the accident.”
Sophia opened it.
Her hands shook.
Inside were contracts.
Bank records.
Messages.
And one name appeared again and again.
Claire.
But not alone.
Andrew’s eyes narrowed.
“There’s someone else.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Claire was never the mastermind.”
Claire looked up.
“What?”
Victor looked at her.
“You really thought you were in control?”
The color drained from her face.
“No.”
Victor continued.
“There was someone guiding you.”
“Someone telling you what to do.”
Andrew felt a chill.
“Who?”
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the hallway.
Then said:
“The person who knew Sophia would survive.”
A silence.
Then footsteps.
Everyone turned.
An older woman appeared.
Sophia froze.
Her face became pale.
“No.”
Andrew looked confused.
“Sophia?”
She whispered:
“My mother.”
The woman smiled.
“Hello, daughter.”
Nobody moved.
Because everyone knew.
Sophia’s mother had died years ago.
Or at least…
That was what they believed.
Sophia stepped back.
“You’re dead.”
The woman smiled.
“So many people in this family love pretending people are dead.”
Andrew felt the room spinning.
Another impossible return.
Another secret.
The woman walked closer.
“My name is Eleanor.”
Sophia stared.
“Why?”
Eleanor’s expression became cold.
“Because I needed you gone.”
Sophia’s voice broke.
“I’m your daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And you tried to kill me.”
Eleanor didn’t deny it.
“I tried to remove a problem.”
Andrew stepped in front of Sophia.
“You’re insane.”
Eleanor ignored him.
She looked at the twins.
“The children were always the important part.”
Andrew’s blood ran cold.
“No.”
Eleanor smiled.
“The bloodline.”
“The inheritance.”
“The future.”
Sophia finally understood.
The fire.
The lies.
Claire.
Victor.
Everything.
It wasn’t about Andrew.
It wasn’t even about revenge.
It was about the children.
Her children.
Noah and Liam.
Eleanor reached toward them.
And Andrew immediately moved.
“Stay away from my sons.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Your sons?”
She looked at Sophia.
“Didn’t you tell him?”
Sophia froze.
Andrew noticed.
“What?”
Silence.
Eleanor smiled.
“You still haven’t told him.”
Sophia looked at Andrew.
Her face filled with fear.
“Tell me what?”
No answer.
Andrew’s heart sank.
“Sophia.”
She looked at him.
Tears forming.
“There’s something you need to know.”
The room became silent.
Then she whispered:
“The boys…”
“They’re not only your children.”
Andrew froze.
“What?”
Sophia closed her eyes.
“I found out before the accident.”
“I was going to tell you.”
Her voice broke.
“The twins were born with a condition.”
“A condition connected to my family.”
Andrew stared.
“What condition?”
Sophia looked at Eleanor.
Then back at him.
“Their blood is the reason everyone has been fighting.”
Andrew felt the ground disappear.
