PART 3: THE SECRET CLAIRE BURIED

PART 3: THE SECRET CLAIRE BURIED

Claire stood in the doorway.

Frozen.

For months, Andrew had seen her as the woman who helped him survive his grief.

The woman who stayed when everyone else left.

The woman who held his children’s hands when they cried.

But now…

She looked like someone caught in a crime.

Emma stared at her.

And there was something in her eyes.

Not anger.

Recognition.

“You knew.”

Claire’s face changed.

“Emma…”

“No.”

Emma’s voice shook.

“You knew I was alive.”

The room became silent.

Andrew looked between them.

His heart was pounding.

“Claire.”

She turned toward him.

“Andrew, listen to me.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

“Answer one question.”

“Did you know?”

Claire opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

Andrew stepped back.

The betrayal hurt differently.

Not like anger.

Like grief.

Because he realized he had lost someone else.

Someone he trusted.

“You knew my wife was alive.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

She had no answer.

“After the wedding?”

Claire looked away.

Andrew laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You were going to marry me while hiding my wife?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“Then what was it?”

Claire’s composure broke.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Andrew stared.

“Protect me?”

“From what?”

She looked at Emma.

“From the truth.”

Emma stepped forward.

“The truth is that she wanted me gone.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Don’t pretend you remember everything.”

Emma stopped.

Because that was the one thing hurting her.

She remembered pieces.

Not everything.

Claire saw it.

And used it.

“You don’t even know what happened.”

Andrew looked at Emma.

Then back at Claire.

“What happened?”

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Emma whispered:

“I remember the fire.”

Andrew’s attention snapped back.

“What?”

She closed her eyes.

“I remember smoke.”

“Pain.”

“Someone pulling me out.”

“Then darkness.”

Claire looked nervous.

Andrew noticed.

“Who pulled you out?”

Emma looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

Claire’s face changed.

Because she knew.

“You do know.”

Claire swallowed.

“I found her.”

The confession stunned Andrew.

“You?”

Claire nodded slowly.

“The night of the accident.”

Andrew felt cold.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Claire looked down.

“Because I was looking for you.”

Andrew frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It does.”

Her voice broke.

“I loved you.”

A pause.

“And I knew you still loved Sophia.”

Andrew didn’t answer.

Because it was true.

He never stopped.

Claire continued:

“I followed Sophia.”

“She had been acting strange.”

“She was planning to leave.”

Andrew froze.

“Leave?”

Emma looked at her.

Claire nodded.

“She found something.”

“What?”

Claire hesitated.

Then:

“About the accident.”

The room went quiet.

Andrew looked at Emma.

“What did you find?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t remember.”

Claire whispered:

“She knew the fire wasn’t an accident.”

Andrew felt his stomach drop.

“What?”

“She found evidence.”

“Someone had tampered with the car.”

Andrew stepped back.

For three years, he believed his wife died because of a tragic accident.

But now…

Everything was changing.

“Who?”

Claire looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Andrew’s eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I’m telling the truth.”

“Why now?”

Claire cried.

“Because she came back.”

The answer was honest.

And terrifying.

Andrew turned toward Emma.

“Sophia…”

The name sounded strange after three years.

Like a word he wasn’t allowed to say.

She looked at him.

“I tried to find you.”

Her voice broke.

“When I remembered enough.”

“I found your name.”

“Your company.”

“Your house.”

“But I was afraid.”

“Why?”

Emma looked down.

“Because I saw pictures.”

Andrew frowned.

“Pictures of what?”

“Claire.”

Silence.

Emma continued:

“She was with you.”

“She was raising my children.”

“I thought…”

Her voice cracked.

“I thought you replaced me.”

Andrew’s face softened.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Never.”

For a moment, they just looked at each other.

A husband and wife separated by a nightmare.

Three years stolen.

Then—

A small voice came from the hallway.

“Mommy?”

Both of them froze.

Noah stood there.

Holding his stuffed animal.

His eyes were wide.

Emma immediately covered her mouth.

“Noah…”

The boy walked slowly toward her.

“Is it really you?”

Emma fell to her knees.

Tears pouring down her face.

“Yes.”

Noah touched her cheek.

Like he was making sure she was real.

“You’re not gone?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

The little boy turned and shouted:

“Liam!”

His brother ran out.

“Mommy?”

And when both children realized…

The woman they remembered from their dreams was standing there…

They broke.

They ran into her arms.

Emma held both sons.

Crying.

Laughing.

Apologizing.

Andrew stood there watching.

After three years…

His family was together again.

But the happiness lasted only seconds.

Because Claire’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned white.

Andrew noticed.

“Who is it?”

Claire didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Andrew stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.”

Claire refused.

Then the screen lit up.

A message appeared.

ONE MISTAKE WAS ALREADY FORGIVEN.

DON’T MAKE ANOTHER.

Andrew saw it.

And his blood turned cold.

Because the sender’s name appeared.

A name he recognized.

A name that shouldn’t exist.

May you like

Sophia’s father.

A man who died years ago.
