Chapter 2 - The Command

The ballroom remained suspended in an suffocating, absolute silence. Not a single champagne glass clinked; not a single fan fluttered. The two hundred high-society guests who had moments ago been chuckling or watching the violence with casual indifference now looked like marble statues, terrified to draw a single deep breath.

Ronan Blackwood moved forward.

He did not walk with haste; he moved with the measured, predatory stride of a panther that owned every inch of the jungle. He peeled off his rain-soaked leather gloves, tossing them carelessly onto a silver tray held by a trembling footman, his sharp grey eyes never leaving the wound on Ivy’s shoulder.

Vivienne tried to recover her posture. She adjusted her diamond necklace, forcing a sweet, trembling smile to her lips, stepping toward Ronan with her hands extended.

"Ronan, darling! You came home early!" she cooed, her voice pitching up slightly in desperation. "You shouldn't have seen this messy affair. This... this heavy domestic creature was insolent to me! She ruined my custom gloves with hot soup and refused to step aside when I attempted to enforce basic household discipline. I was merely maintaining the standards of the Blackwood name—"

"Quiet," Ronan said.

He did not raise his voice, but the single word cut through Vivienne’s melodic defense like a razor blade through silk.

Vivienne froze mid-step, her extended hands dropping to her sides, her eyes wide with shock. Never in their eighteen-month engagement had Ronan spoken to her in such a manner in front of their peers.

Ronan paid no attention to his fiancée. He walked directly past her, stopping less than a foot from Ivy.

Up close, the physical contrast between them was striking. Ronan was six-foot-four, broad-shouldered, and radiating an overwhelming power carved from years of syndicate warfare. Ivy stood tall, her full, voluptuous frame carrying a soft, natural dignity, her face calm despite the red burn marks on her neck and the blood soaking her torn navy sleeve.

Ronan looked down at her. His grey eyes, usually as unyielding as slate, softened by a fraction of a degree as he noticed the subtle tremble in her broad hands.

"What is your name?" Ronan asked softly.

"Ivy, sir," she answered, her voice surprisingly steady, rich, and melodic, carrying a quiet strength that hummed through the silent room. "Ivy Lancaster."

"Why did you take the strike, Ivy?"

Ivy did not glance back at Mia, who was still weeping behind her. She knew that in a house like this, pointing out the weak was equivalent to handing them a death sentence.

"I am responsible for the safety of the floor during service, Mr. Blackwood," Ivy replied smoothly, her dark eyes looking straight into his grey ones. "The accident occurred under my watch."

Ronan’s eyes narrowed slightly. He possessed a supernatural ability to detect lies, honed through a decade of interrogating rivals. He knew instantly she was protecting the girl behind her, just as he knew the soup burn on her collarbone was far older than the fresh blood on her shoulder.

He turned slowly to face the ballroom. His gaze swept over the senators, the syndicate bosses, and the wealthy socialites who had sat by and watched a defenseless woman be whipped for entertainment.

"Every person in this room," Ronan announced, his baritone voice echoing off the high frescoed ceiling, "has five minutes to leave my house."

A murmur of disbelief rippled through the crowd. Senator Vance stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously. "Now see here, Ronan... this is the annual Solstice Gala. We have investments to discuss, treaties to sign—"

Ronan turned his head, looking at the senator with an expression so dark it caused the seasoned politician to take an immediate step back.

"Four minutes," Ronan said flatly.

Within thirty seconds, the grand ballroom was an absolute stampede of high society scrambling for the exit. Wealthy women grabbed their fur coats; investors tripped over their own feet; and politicians hurried out the massive oak doors into the pouring rain, leaving the room completely deserted except for Ronan, Vivienne, Ivy, Mia, and four senior security officers.

Ronan looked at the head security guard, Vance.

"Take the young girl to the staff quarters. Give her mother ten thousand dollars from my private account and tell her she is on paid administrative leave for three months."

Mia gasped, looking up in shock before Vance gently guided her out of the room.

Now, only three people remained in the center of the vast, empty ballroom.

Ronan looked at Vivienne, whose blue eyes were now filled with a volatile mix of embarrassment and absolute fury.

"You," Ronan said, pointing a single finger toward the floor, "will sit in that chair and watch."
