Chapter 7 - The Transformation

The transition was swift, absolute, and executed with the ruthless efficiency characteristic of Ronan Blackwood.
By mid-afternoon, news of Ivy’s appointment had sent shockwaves through the syndicate’s upper echelon. The internal memo sent to all department heads was brief, written in Ronan’s own handwriting:
Ivy Lancaster has been appointed Chief Financial Auditor. Her authority on all internal accounts, treaties, and estate logistics is absolute, second only to my own. Disrespect to her will be treated as treason against the Blackwood name.
At three o'clock, a team of high-end tailors from the city’s most exclusive fashion house arrived at the estate, brought personally by Ronan’s security detail.
Ivy stood in the center of the spacious master dressing room on the third floor—a room that had once been reserved for high-ranking diplomats.
The navy cotton maid uniform was gone, replaced by luxurious fabrics that celebrated, rather than hid, her full, curvy frame.
"You are magnificent, mademoiselle," the lead French tailor remarked, making minor adjustments to a tailored dark emerald green silk trousersuit. "Most high-fashion houses design only for hanger-thin figures, but true style requires form, grace, and presence. You carry this cloth like a queen."
The emerald jacket was expertly cut to highlight her waist, tapering smoothly over her wide hips and full bust, paired with wide-leg trousers that flowed like liquid silk with every step she took. Her dark, thick hair had been styled into soft, elegant waves that fell over her shoulders, framing her warm hazel eyes and sharp cheekbones.
The dressing room door opened softly.
Ronan stepped inside. He had changed into a dark grey three-piece suit, looking every bit the sovereign king of the city. He stopped in his tracks, his grey eyes sweeping over Ivy from head to toe, a look of unadulterated appreciation washing over his harsh features.
"Leave us," Ronan commanded the tailors flatly.
The tailors gathered their pins and measuring tapes, bowing discreetly before exiting the room, closing the heavy doors behind them.
Ronan walked slowly toward Ivy, his heavy footsteps echoing against the hardwood floor. He stopped right in front of her, taking in the radiant, powerful sight of her in emerald green.
"You look breathtaking, Ivy," Ronan said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that sent a shiver of warmth down her spine.
"I feel... strange," Ivy admitted softly, smoothing her hands down the front of her silk jacket. "For three years, I wore navy cotton to make myself invisible. This dress makes it impossible to hide."
"You were never invisible to me, Ivy," Ronan confessed quietly, reaching out his hand, his long, scarred fingers gently tucking a stray wave of dark hair behind her ear.
Ivy looked up, startled by his words. "What?"
"I noticed you eighteen months ago," Ronan revealed, his grey eyes holding hers with intense honesty. "I saw you carrying heavy linen baskets up three flights of stairs without a single complaint. I saw you spending your lunch breaks teaching Mia how to read in the pantry. I saw a woman of immense strength, beauty, and grace living in a house full of spoiled, superficial ghouls."
He stepped closer, his broad chest almost touching hers, his scent of cedarwood and rain completely surrounding her.
"I was trapped in an arrangement with Vivienne to keep peace between syndicate factions," Ronan continued, his jaw tightening. "Every day I spent with her made me sick. Seeing her strike you last night didn't start my fire, Ivy—it exploded it."
Ivy’s breath hitched. She looked into his dark, fierce eyes, seeing no trace of the cold mafia boss the city feared—only a man who saw her, valued her, and wanted to protect her.

Before she could speak, Vance knocked sharply on the dressing room door.
"Mr. Blackwood! We have a emergency at the south harbor terminal! Julian Hale’s loyalists have seized three cargo cranes! They are demanding Miss Lancaster be delivered to them in exchange for the shipping keys!"
