Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The atmosphere in the ballroom plummeted into a suffocating chill.

Vivienne stared at the black leather notebook lying on the polished marble table. She knew what the Blackwood Ledger was—every old-money family in the city spoke of it in hushed, terrified whispers. It was the master record kept by the Blackwood family for over seventy years, detailing every illegal transaction, every hidden offshore account, every forged deed, and every treasonous act committed by the city's elite.

To have one's name written in the Crimson section of the ledger meant instant financial and social annihilation.

"Ronan... please," Vivienne stammered, her arrogant composure crumbling into sheer panic as she reached out to grab his sleeve. "You are overreacting! It was just a maid! A fat, disposable domestic worker! My father has invested thirty million dollars into your harbor expansion project! Our families are bound by contract!"

Ronan pulled his arm away from her touch with absolute disgust.

"Your father did not invest thirty million dollars, Vivienne," Ronan said, his voice flat and precise. "He laundered thirty million dollars of stolen municipal pension funds through my harbor accounts. He believed I was too busy with European operations to notice."

He opened the black ledger to a page filled with dense, meticulously handwritten numbers and bank routing codes.

"Three days ago, while I was in London, my intelligence team received an anonymous tip detailing your father’s secondary accounting ledger," Ronan continued, his eyes flicking briefly toward Ivy, who sat quietly on the settee, wrapped in his heavy coat. "Your father has been leaking shipping manifests to the Russian syndicate in Brighton Beach. He traded my security routes to clear his own gambling debts."

Vivienne’s breath hitched. Her face went as white as her silk dress. "No... that's a lie! My father would never—"

"Your father is currently being arrested at his country club by federal agents," Ronan interrupted ruthlessly. "I released his personal banking files to the Department of Justice twenty minutes before I entered this ballroom."

Vivienne gasped, sinking back into her chair as if she had been struck. "You... you destroyed my family over an accounting error?!"

"I destroyed your family because they are traitors," Ronan corrected, stepping closer, his tall shadow completely enveloping her trembling form. "And I am casting you out of this house tonight because you are a cruel, vicious monster who believes wealth gives you the right to bleed human beings."

He turned to Vance, who was standing attentively by the entrance.

"Escort Miss Hale to her private chambers. She has one hour to pack her personal clothing. None of the jewelry, furs, or cars purchased with Blackwood funds will leave this estate. At five o'clock tomorrow morning, a car will take her to the airport. She is banished from this territory permanently."

"Ronan! No! You can't do this to me!" Vivienne screamed, her voice echoing hysterically off the high ceilings as Vance stepped forward, grabbing her firmly by her upper arms. "I am the future queen of this syndicate! You can't throw me away for a curvy servant!"

"Drag her out," Ronan ordered coldly.

Vance and two secondary officers lifted Vivienne from the chair, dragging her kicking and screaming down the grand hallway, her silk dress rustling violently until the heavy double doors slammed shut, cutting off her shrill cries.

The grand ballroom fell silent once again.

Ronan stood alone in the center of the vast space, his chest rising and falling in slow, controlled breaths. He turned around slowly to look at Ivy.

Ivy sat still on the leather settee, holding his heavy wool coat closed around her chest, her dark eyes wide as she processed the terrifying speed with which the powerful Hale family had just been erased from the city's hierarchy.

Ronan walked over, taking a seat on the oak coffee table directly across from her, his long legs framing her position.

"Are you afraid of me, Ivy?" he asked softly, his grey eyes searching her face with an earnestness that surprised her.

Ivy looked at his scarred hands, then up at his harsh, handsome face that had just commanded the downfall of an empire.

"No, Mr. Blackwood," Ivy answered quietly, her voice ringing clear and true in the quiet room. "I am not afraid of a man who protects those who cannot defend themselves."

Ronan felt a sudden, powerful warmth blossom in his chest—a feeling he had not experienced in years within the cold, treacherous walls of his life.

"Good," Ronan said, reaching out to gently touch the edge of his coat resting on her shoulder. "Because tomorrow morning, this house is going to change."
