Chapter 5 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

For the next three weeks, Grace’s life underwent a complete transformation.
She spent her mornings resting in the estate gardens, reading books, and eating nutritious meals prepared by Mrs. Gable. Dr. Mercer visited the estate twice a week with portable ultrasound equipment, confirming that the baby’s heart rate had stabilized and the placental blood flow had improved dramatically.
Vincent, despite running a vast business empire, made a point to return to the estate every evening for dinner.
Grace discovered that behind his formidable, feared reputation lay a man of deep intellect, quiet humor, and an unshakeable sense of loyalty. They spent hours sitting by the fireplace, talking about her mother, Sarah, and listening to stories about the old neighborhood.
However, peace in Vincent Caruso’s world was never entirely unthreatened.
On a chilly Tuesday evening, while Grace was sitting in the estate library reading a book on infant care, she heard raised voices coming from Vincent’s private study down the hall.
"He's pushing too hard, Vincent!" Marco’s voice echoed through the heavy oak door. "Julian Vance is telling the docks that you've gone soft because you're harboring a pregnant civilian at the estate!"
Grace froze near the library doorway, her heart beating fast.
"Julian Vance is an idiot who mistakes patience for weakness," Vincent’s voice cold and deadly, cut through the hallway. "He thinks because his brother is a state senator he can interfere with my shipping routes."
"He knows about the girl, boss," Marco warned. "He knows she’s Sarah Miller’s daughter. He’s looking for leverage against you."
Grace backed away slowly, her hand going instinctively to her stomach.
A wave of guilt washed over her. She realized that by being here, by accepting Vincent’s protection, she had inadvertently placed herself in the middle of a dangerous turf war between powerful men.
Ten minutes later, Vincent stepped out of his study. He saw Grace standing near the hallway window, her face pale and troubled.
Vincent walked over to her, his sharp eyes instantly sensing her distress. "You heard Marco."
"I didn't mean to eavesdrop," Grace said softly, looking up at him. "Vincent... I can't stay here if I'm putting you or your organization in danger. If this Julian Vance person is looking for me—"
Vincent stepped closer, his posture towering and utterly confident. He reached out and gently lifted her chin with his fingers.
"Grace," Vincent said, his eyes burning with absolute certainty. "Julian Vance cannot touch a single hair on your head. This estate is a fortress. You are not a burden, and you are not a liability. You are the daughter of the woman who saved my life, and you are under my personal protection."
"But what if he tries to use me against you?" Grace asked nervously.
"Then he will discover why people in this city fear the Caruso name," Vincent said plainly. "Tomorrow, I am hosting a private gathering here at the estate. The regional business leaders and city directors will be attending. I want you at my side."
May you like
Grace blinked in surprise. "At your side? Vincent, I'm just a janitor—"
"You are Grace Miller," Vincent corrected her firmly. "You carry yourself with more grace and dignity than any socialite in this city. Tomorrow night, everyone in Philadelphia will know that you and your daughter are under my wing. No one will ever dare question your place again."
